Pottery Barn Comfort Roll Arm Sectional (theatre room progress!)

I’m back!  And I missed you all!  My kids finished their last week of school and it was so jam packed I barely had time to sleep let alone blog.  But we made it!  At our house it’s now officially summer!  I can’t tell you how good it feels to take break from all the things school brings.  (I’m sure I don’t need to tell most of you.. you know!)  When my kids were little summer felt like more of a struggle, but as my kids get older and more busy and involved in activities I am cherishing our low key summers with family time more every year.  We are ready for this break!

I have so many things to share with you all I don’t even know where to start!  So today I’ll just start with a couch.  My Pottery Barn Comfort Roll Arm Sectional.  I get asked so many questions about our family room couch so I’m sharing a few details today along with some theatre room progress!  That also involves a PB Comfort Roll Arm Sectional.

Because I’m never predictable and I don’t buy multiples of things I like.  Ha. :)

This picture was taken soon after we moved into our home (about 4 years ago) and I was just starting to decorate.  I knew I wanted a sectional because of the spacing in this room and sat on what felt like hundreds of couches to find “the one.”   The PB Comfort Roll Arm Sectional was hands down my favorite.  I love the look and style but mostly am a fan of how comfortable it is.  So comfortable!  We customized it to fit the room size and went with the roll arm vs. a square arm.

We have loved this couch and I look forward to crashing on it at the end of each day!  The only thing I haven’t loved is the material we chose (which I get asked about a lot!).  For this couch I chose “Flax” Textured Basketweave (Fabric Grade D).  I LOVE the look.  And HATE the way it stains.  I knew I was getting into trouble going with a linen and not getting a performance fabric, but at the time the performance fabric options at PB weren’t as appealing.  I really wanted this fabric and thought we could keep it mostly clean.  And we have.  The kids are pretty careful, but accidents always happen and while most of the couch looks good, if you look up close there are a handful of spots and stains. Not a huge deal, but if I were buying this again now I would get one of PB’s Performance Fabrics like we put on the couch in our living room.  Things wipe off so easily with the Performance fabrics and they have so many better options available now!

The most common question I get asked about this couch (after what is the fabric) is about how the cushions are holding up!

Not bad!  They are a little more squishy.. especially the few we crash on the most often, but I like a “lived in” look so they don’t bother me at all.  We chose a slipcover for this couch and will probably replace this fabric with a Performance fabric that has a similar look in the next year or two.

So when I last shared Theatre Room progress it looked like this.

While we aren’t completely finished, things are looking a lot more put together and we have a couch!  Another PB Comfort Roll Arm Sectional to be exact.  You can customize these couches so we made this one bigger to fill the room and added a chaise.  We also went with an upholstered couch to mix things up (I’m tricky like that) and a performance fabric knowing that this room will be mostly used by kids.  With popcorn and treats in hand. :)

We also have fabric on the walls in this space and I’ll share better pics of that in a post when I finally finish the lingering details that need to be wrapped up this room.  Hopefully this summer!

The fabric I chose for this couch is “Pebble” Premium Performance Basketweave (Fabric Grade P) and I love it!  It has a similar look/style as the family room Flax fabric I have, but this fabric has more of a grey undertone. (It’s hard to tell the difference in these pictures!)

I knew I wanted this same couch for our theatre room because I have loved our family room couch so much!  And I wanted more of a family room feel for this room vs. the theatre style of chairs.  We can fit a lot of kids on this couch!  And pile more on the floor.  Mission accomplished. :)

I also recently decided on a rug for this space and am excited to get some color in this room!  I choose this Kala printed rug in “midnight.”

It was on sale for a great price (still is!) and I love the shade of blue.  I still need to slide it up under the couch a bit more.  It’s soft and durable and just what we needed to protect the carpet and add some personality to this space.  I’ve been having a love affair with blue/nay rugs lately!

It’s very similar to this Arabesque Wool West Elm rug I put in my guest room.

Like I said, I’m never predictable and don’t buy multiples of things I really like.  :)

If any of you have other questions about my Pottery Barn Comfort Roll Arm Sectional let me know!  I’ll answer them in comments and I’ll add them to this post.  For now, the kids’ backpacks are cleaned out and put away in our mudroom lockers!  Let the summer fun begin!

  1. I always find it so bizarre that those of you state side finish up for summer so early – here in the UK we have till late July so we are really just ramping up the end of the year now (off to school for the youngest, checking out secondary schools for the eldest – I do get one year with all 3 together – piano and dance exams, sports day, stay and learns, costumes, oh and work somehow has to fit in!) feeling a little jealous that your done, although summer brings its own mix of juggling with younger ones too! Have fun in the sun!

    1. Yes! We get out in June and go back at the end of August so it’s a nice break for sure. It’s such a juggle isn’t it!? SO many things going on in all directions all the time when you have kids. We are excited for a break but I know after a few weeks I’ll probably be missing school! Ha! ;) Thank you! xo

  2. Hello! Love your couch. A question about the color of your choice. You said there is grey undertone. But in the picture, it looks pretty white. Do you have a good solution to keep it clean? Like you said, there will be many popcorn hands on the couch! I am curious because I have always a fan of a light colored couch, but have not been brave enough to get one.

    Thanks!

    1. Thank you! I know it’s so hard to tell in those pics! But there really is a lot of grey in that couch. But yes.. it’s light and will have many popcorn hands on it! Because it’s a “performance” fabric it cleans off SO easily. We’ve already had a few small food stains that wiped right off! I just used a little soapy water and they came right up. The performance fabrics are awesome!

  3. Congratulations on making it through the end of the year. And I saw on Insta-stories that you haven’t let any grass grow under your feet. You have planned a family adventure. Well earned I must say! Have fun! The couch looks great in the living room and the theater room. If it isn’t broke, don’t fix it, right? Well, fix just the part that causes the most worry. The rug looks great too. I’d say it’s lit, but I don’t think you want things really lit in the theater room, especially when you are trying to actually watch a movie. So, I’ll say it looks terrific so far. :) Let the summer break begin! Hugs!

    1. Thank you so much Jeanne! You crack me up! Ha ha.. Yes! We are off on a quick adventure to Orlando Florida! I usually like to take the week after school gets out to just chill at home and recover, but this week was the only week we could make this trip happen with everyone’s schedules. Getting ready to tackle Universal Studios with the kids tomorrow so wish me luck! :) Hugs to you!! xo

  4. Erin, I love your blog. I bought two sofas from Arhaus a couple of years ago, and the salesperson gave me a great suggestion. She said on the first of every month, flip your sofa cushions over! Now this will not be possible with all of your cushions, based on your layout, but you could do it for most of them. I shift them around also, since we all tend to sit in the same spot (creatures of habit). It has really helped the wear and tear on our sofas. Can’t wait to see your completed media room!

    1. Thank you so much Carolyn! That made my day. :) And that is seriously the BEST advice! Love that! I’m totally going to start flipping and moving cushions! I think I’ll set it as a reminder on my phone for once a month so I don’t forget. Thank you! :) xo

  5. Beautiful! I was wondering if the color of your Arboleda Coffee Table is “barnwood” or “rustic oak.” Thank you!

  6. We have a PB roll arm sofa and are loving it! Very comfortable and bounces back easily with a little fluffing of the back cushions. No young kids at my house anymore, so no stains YET. It is nice that I can take my cushion covers off and wash them. Good choice!

    Enjoy your summer!

        1. Hi Kesha! We went with the memory foam (I sat on both and liked the feel of it better) and have loved it! It has held up great. :)

  7. Hi, I have been looking at that same sofa this week? Did you get the memory foam or down blend? I think I want gray fabric due to the dog!
    Thanks,
    Judy

    1. Oh well how was that for timing Judy!? :) I went with memory foam just because I like the way it feels to sit on better. And yes! A gray performance fabric would be perfect for a dog! xo

  8. Do you put anything down under your area rugs when you layer over top of wall to wall carpet? In the past I had a beautiful VERY high quality area rug and put it directly on carpeting and over time the carpet underneath yellowed so I’m always anxious about that.

    1. Hi Jen! Oh my word.. I would be anxious after that happening too! I don’t put anything under our rugs on carpet and so far haven’t had a problem with that! My girls have had rugs in their rooms for years and we are good so far! Was your room getting a lot of sunlight? It might have been something to do with the bottom of the specific rug you were using. Something I’ll watch for too. Thanks for the heads up!

    1. I wanted to include that info. and couldn’t find it! But I can tell you it’s the whitest performance fabric they have!

  9. Hi Erin,
Just wanted to let you know that I’m not having much luck with the Pottery Barn links in this post.

    1. Hi Jamie! Are they still not working for you? I’ve tested them on a few computers and they seem to be working. Let me know! xo

  10. I will soon be purchasing a sectional from PB and was happy to see this post for tips. It was very helpful.

    Thank you.

  11. Hi Erin – Love you & everything you do! Quick question…is the fabric on your Media sofa the Sunbrella “Pebble” ? That’s what I’m looking at getting for mine & yours looks whiter then I expect. Also, I have followed you for a while & would love to PIN certain images that you post but aren’t able to do that. Maybe I’m not technicaly savvy & didn’t figure that out! Is that something you do?
Thanks again for all your inspiration!
    Tara

    1. Hi Tara! Thank you so much! So sweet of you to say. Yes! It’s Pebble and looks lighter in these pics than it really is. So strange about the pinning. If you hover over one of my pictures you should see a little red box with a “P” in the top left corner to click on to pin! Let me know if you have any other problems! xo

  12. Hi Erin! I know you haven’t had the couch for too terribly long yet, but how is the memory foam holding up on the back cushions? I want this couch sooo bad but those back cushions make me nervous with the stories everyone tells!

    1. Hi Julie! We haven’t had the theatre room couch long but this is the same couch we have in our family room that we’ve had for 5 years and we’ve loved it! The back cushions do slouch a little, but I don’t mind the worn in look. We’ve loved the couch.. obviously.. we bought a second one! :)

      1. Thanks for the reply, Erin! Do you think that the memory foam back cushions will wear the same way, i.e. slouching/sagging?

        1. I’m not sure! I would call PB and ask someone who works there for their honest opinion! I’ve heard you can order and replace single cushions too so that’s always an option if some are bothering you a few years down the road! I’m sure if we have this couch another 5 years we’ll be doing that. :)

      1. HI Erin! How are the memory foam cushions holding up? Are you happy with them? I’m trying to decide between memory foam and down.

        1. Hi Lindsay! I’m really happy with them! They’ve held up great! One or two of the back cushions in our family room are a little less straight and full because they get laid on so much.. (we’ve had that couch almost 6 years) but they still look good overall! xo

  13. Hi Erin, how has your PB Kala rug (blue rug under sectional in your pics) held up? Wish PB would allow reviews! Thanks much!

  14. Hi! We just got this sAme couch – just wondering did yours take some time to break in? Ours feels pretty stiff !🤞🏼🤦🏼‍♀️

  15. Hi Erin,
How has your sofa held up? We purchased a PB Comfort Sectional. It arrived yesterday but it was a bit of a disappointment. The seat cushions don’t seem to fit nice and snug bug rather they have gaps between them. Is this a problem you ran into as well?

    1. Hi Sophie! Oh no! We haven’t had that problem with either of our PB couches! I would definitely call the store and let them know.

  16. Hi Erin,
Just left PB store and the down-wrapped cushions seem much firmer than the memory foam. Firm is good for me as a 200 lb guy. But the website says down-wrapped are softer. Wondering if my salesperson got it mixed up? I should have pulled up the cushions and checked but we’re supposed to be hands off for now. Do you know which is firmer? Thanks.

    1. Hi David! I would call PB and ask a few associates but I think the memory foam is more firm! That’s why we went that route too. Definitely call and get a few associate opinions!

  17. Hi Erin! Do you happen to know the pile height (low, medium, or high) on the Kala rug in your theatre room? Is it soft under bare feet? We are looking at ordering it but the PB website doesn’t specify.

    Great blog!

  18. Any differences worth pointing out between the slipcovered and upholstered versions? (other than the obvious). Is one holding up better than the other? Do you love one over the other?
    Thanks!

    1. The only real difference is in the style! I really love them both. The slipcover couch you do have to re-adjust once in a while and it has a more casual look. They are both holding up great! :)

  19. Any update on the PB Comfort sectionals a few years on? We are considering an upholstered PB Comfort Square Arm for our family room. My main concerns is sagging in the back pillows and/or the seat cushions. Thanks for any updates!

    1. Hi Dana! We’ve loved ours! The back pillows do sag a little after a few years of use so if that’s something that will bother you think about it. It hasn’t bothered us at all.. it’s just two back cushions that get the most use and I can always fluff them up a little. The couch overall is SO comfortable and has held up great! I’ve actually heard you can order new inserts if that becomes an issue years later too!

  20. Thank for this information on the pottery barn sofa. May I ask what type of cushions you got? Were they the memory foam wrapped or the feather cushions?
