My new planner

K.  You all know my deep, undying love for planners.  I’m so obsessed with planners that I tend to switch them up often.  Always coming up with new systems to attempt to organize my time better.

For years I used my Time Management Binder and it worked so well for me.  I still use the sticky note shopping list system!  So easy to grab a sticky note and head to the store.

Then building my house became all consuming so I switched to my Time Management Notepad because I needed more space for writing list after list of house to-do’s.  I’ve since dropped the additional tabs for other things and have labeled the whole notebook NEW HOUSE since I don’t have time for anything else anyway.  I’ve gone through about three of these babies to date.  Thank goodness the house is almost finished.  I seriously fear for our forests if my to-do lists don’t cease at some point.  :)
Since the notepad holds my new house lists, I needed a smaller planner to keep in my purse to calendar our every day stuff.  I bought the new Martha Stewart Planner because it’s cute and matched my ever growing heap of Martha Stewart organizers…
but I didn’t really feel like it met my needs for all I wanted it to hold without tweaking it and adding things to it which I just don’t have time for right now.  So when I received an e-mail from the folks at Day Timer asking if I wanted to pick something from their site to review on my blog I said YES!  PLEASE!  Which is funny because my usual response to emails like that is thanks, but no thanks.  Bottom line is that I just can’t resist a good planner.  And this is a good one!
I looked at everything they had on-line (so many fun organizing solutions) and chose the “Family Plus Solution Set.”  It comes in two colors: blue and purple and much to El’s dismay, I chose the blue.  I like the fun pop of color and how nicely it snaps shut.  It’s small enough to fit in my purse, but big enough for me to have room to write.
I also like all of the happy colored tabs.
And the notepad in the back for additional notes.  Moms always have additional notes.
Monthly calendar spread.
And a section to the side of each month for goals.  I like that.  I always have a few things I try to work on each month.  Little things like drink more water, etc.  Plus I jot down goals I’ve set for the kids so I remember what I’m working on with them for the month.  (Yes – I set goals for the kids too – they love me for that.)  Example: El – master multiplication fact sheet in under two minutes.  Ad – finish all books on reading contract.  Kole – pronouns (speech therapy goal).  And Kenny – hang wet towels up after shower.  Kidding.  I don’t write a goal for Kenny.  I just politely remind him.  Daily.  ;)
Here is the section that I am really loving and the reason I chose this planner.
I love seeing the week laid out in front of me.

It has a small section at the top for to-do’s.

Room to write down important appointments/activities for each day of the week.
Or the weekend.

And a big section in the middle where you can write the weeks’ dinner menu.  LOVE this.  I am really trying to plan our dinners a week at a time because I don’t have time to run to the grocery store as often as I used to.  Even if our meal for the evening is chicken nuggets and corn on the cob – writing it down and making sure I have everything ready a week at a time has been a big time saver for me lately.

This is my planner right now.  I recognize it looks ridiculous with everything blocked out so you can’t read it.  I had no choice since I work for the CIA and my daily assignments (a.k.a missions) are top secret.  You can see how I am using the left side for appointments/activities and the right side for meal planning and notes.  I divide my notes into two sections (CIA agents do that) – a section for miscellaneous to-do’s and one for house stuff that needs to be taken care of ASAP.  Anything house related that needs to be done but not right at this second goes into my notebook.  Which I appropriately refer to as “the motherload.”

End of story is that I’m really loving my new planner!  It’s a great solution for busy moms (and anyone else trying to save the world).  Plus you can get it for a great price.  You can check out the details (and other fun planners) at Day Timer.

Happy planning!  And happy Friday.

Quick Fashion Fix!

Not much time to post tonight.  After a typical afternoon/evening of new house issues, helping the girls with homework, Kole’s therapy, cooking dinner, dinner clean-up, and the bedtime routine I was feeling a bit depleted.  Today was definitely a Monday!  (Anyone else feeling it?)  I knew I had a good hour before bed and I could either plop down in front of the TV and blog OR take a nice hot bath.  Hmmm… what to do with my precious hour of free time….??  Then Kenny came home with the new Star Trek movie and just like that – decision made.  Time for a bath.  :)  Even though I’m short on blog time I wanted to pop in to answer a quick question and share something fun I found on Pinterest.  I’m working on a Q & A but thought I’d share the answer to this question I received on Facebook last week since it’s similar to other e-mails I’ve received.

“I miss Fashion Fridays!  Maybe instead of clothing fashion you could do a post on home fashion with ideas of how you plan to decorate your new home???  Pretty Please!!!”

First of all – thank you so much.  Such a kind question.  :)  Let me tell you – building has been a big time commitment (way bigger than I ever imagined!) and while I’ve loved a lot of the process, I’ve definitely had to let a lot of things go.  My house is a mess every day.  Seriously.  Drawers may be organized, but the floor and counters are covered.  Boxes are strewn about everywhere – some half packed.  The laundry?  Done twice a week if we’re lucky (I used to be so good about doing a load a day) and a home cooked dinner is hit and miss.  Of course my blogging time has been limited as well.  I take a lot of pics of the house and then don’t have time to post them.  Plus it has been hard to share a lot of new house pics throughout the process because so much of the house is constantly covered up and a dusty mess.  I promise that once the house is finished and we’ve moved in, I will share a lot more house pictures.  I’ll have more time to share decisions I’ve made along the way once I’m done making all of the decisions.  :)  I’ll also share a lot of fun decor pics along the way while I begin decorating.  And of course, I’ll share lots of the organizing going on as well!  (So excited for that!)  I’m hoping that when this process is behind us I’ll have more time to blog in general and I’ll be able to bring back post topics like Fashion Fridays, gift ideas, etc. now and again.  SO the answer to this question is YES!  FOR SURE!  Just give me another month or so to finish building and to move.  Then I will bore you all to death with home decor pics.  :)

As far as fashion is concerned, currently I’m running around most days in jeans and flip flops with paint all over them.  Nothing too fashionable about that.  :)  So here is something I found on Pinterest to give us all a little fashion fix!

YEA!  Boot season is upon us!  Check out this post for 10 fun ways to wear your boots this Fall.
It gave me a lot of great ideas.
Can’t wait to blow the dust off of mine.
:)
Happy beginning of Fall everyone!

Picture Dump

A guy came to give me a quote on putting Epoxy on our garage floors and he had the coolest little office set up inside his car!  He works on the go and said that this set up has worked like a charm.  I thought it was so smart – functional and organized.  He was kind enough to let me snap a few pics with my iphone for the blog.  He made the little desk with dividers and then just put a rug pad on top of it to hold things in place.

Compartments for his printer and papers.

Smaller dividers for office supplies.  Genius!  I had to share it with all of you.  I think a set up like this could work for so many different situations – in your car or in your house.  I called Kenny and told him we were getting our Epoxy from him despite other quotes.  He won me over with his warm smile and organization.  :)
Pics I snapped last month at a Padres baseball game.

Kenny loves to take the whole fam to baseball games in the summer.  The girls and I aren’t all that into the game.  I bring magazines and the girls bring coloring books and we keep ourselves entertained waiting patiently for the real reason we go – nachos and the end of the game fireworks.

This was Kole’s first game and he loved every minute of it.  I thought he would want to be up and running around the stadium the whole time but he never left our laps!

Every day since he asks me “we go a baseball game today mommy?”  :)
Not today little buddy.  But soon.
We are working on getting him as excited about Charger football but with the way they played today I doubt we’ll have much luck with that one.
2nd grade.  She’s having a ball.

I saw this white mirrored hutch on TV last week and am DYING over it!  Isn’t it so beautiful with that fun circle pattern!?  I feel like it’s my new mission in life to find a duplicate.  Not that I even have a place I need it in our house, but I might need to create one!  I’ve found a few things similar, but not the exact same one.  Nothing that I like as much.

I might have to call the Property Brothers to find out where they got it.
I’m pretty tight with the two of them since we all hang out so much.
Good days always end with Property Brothers on the DVR.
Face painting at a firm party.  El wanted the panda to permanently live on her forehead and was so disappointed when it washed off.

Ad loved her tatoos for the afternoon because they coordinated with her shirt and skirt, but the second her clothes changed she wanted them off.  Too many accessories clutter an outfit.

My mom bought Kenny this shirt for his birthday.
It’s almost TOO perfect for him.
Our weather cooled of a little this weekend and for a nano second I was in the mood to cook!  A few things I want to make this week if there is time.  Which there won’t be.  But if there was, this is what I would be cooking:
and
As soon as we are settled in the new house I am anxious to try so many new recipes I’ve been pinning on my Food/Recipe Pinterest board.  Hoping my cooking mood lasts more than a nano second.

:)

Happy Monday everyone!

Packing up Fall

Kids were so excited about the pool that they HAD to jump in the evening it was filled.  No chemicals in the pool yet – straight hose water.  Freezing cold!  A few neighbors joined them and they had quite the time together.  Teeth chattering away.  Yard isn’t finished.  House isn’t finished.  Pool isn’t finished.  But they swam anyway.  And loved it.  Water!  It’s all kids need to party.  :)

I spent the afternoon getting all of my Halloween and Fall decor out.
And then packing it all away in boxes.  Kind of bummed I will miss Fall decorating this year!
But on the bright side, I will be moved in time to deck the halls for Christmas.
:)

Hoping to find more time for blogging next week!  Enjoy your weekend everyone!

Plastering the pool!

Hello friends!  I went dark for a few days.  K.  That just sounded a lot more serious than I meant for it to.  Let me start again.  I took a mini blogging hiatus to deal with house stuff.  Wait.  It sounded cooler to say I went “dark.”  I’m sticking with that one.  It’s all about the pool this week!  Time to plaster!  After checking out several pools last week (so many fun options) we ended up choosing pebble tec with a hydrazzo like finish.  If that makes no sense to you it’s ok – I wouldn’t have understood it a week ago.  :)  The color is a custom mix my landscaper came up with based on the shade of blue we want the water to be.  Too funny that it matches all of the aqua in my house!  Not planned.  :)  Here are a few pics from plaster day…

I bought these three little turtles because I thought they would be fun for my three little turtles.  :)

I also picked out these fish for the shamu shelf.  I woke up at 5:00 am Monday morning and drove inland for an hour in crazy morning traffic to buy them.  Then flew back to the coast to be at our house by 8:00 when the plastering was about to start (yeah – cut it a little close with that one!).  When the kids saw them they decided the baby fish is Kole, the middle two are the girls, and the first fish is daddy.  Where’s the mommy fish?  According to Ellie I was eaten by a shark.  (What!?)  Now I’m totally kicking myself that I didn’t buy one more fish!  Clearly I’m paying the price.  :)

They started filling the pool with water this afternoon!
Three little turtles anxious to swim.
:)
p.s.  I’ve been getting several of the same questions about wood floors, paint colors, and a few other new house things so I’m going to write a Q & A post soon.  Let me know if you have any other questions in the comments!  Enjoy your day!

Entry light (Orb Chandelier)

Lots of light hanging going on at the house this week!  Some fixtures look better than I expected.  Yea!  Some fixtures are too long because I apparently can’t measure.  Boo.  If only hobbits were allowed in my house I would be able to keep my too long fixtures, but sadly one of my carpenters who is over 6 feet tall says they have to go.  Even though they look amazing.  For a hobbit house.  :)  While I am back to the drawing board with my upstairs hallway lighting, I think I nailed it with the entry light!

I decided to go with this Orb Chandelier from Restoration Hardware.  I have loved this exact one for so long!  But I put off buying it because it was so pricey.  I kept looking for other options and found several fixtures I liked, but nothing was big enough for the space.  Then not long ago this baby went on sale.  The exact size and finish I had been admiring!  I scooped one up so fast and just days later they were sold out.  Seems I’m not the only one who adores the orb!

So today the scaffolding went up…
And so did my light!  Although it needs to be lowered about 4 feet.

We are waiting for the extension chain.  My electricians were sweet enough to hang it for me without the chain so we could make sure it looked right and see exactly where to put it.  My electricians were also sweet enough to follow me to my old house to pick up the light because it didn’t fit in my car.  My electricians were then sweet enough to ever so politely tease me about my driving.  Apparently they think I have a bit of a lead foot.  “What!?” I immediately protested.  “I was driving my slowest most careful speed not to lose you guys!”  They were then sweet enough to promise to not mention my lead foot to my husband.  Not that it would be news to him.  And now I’ll be sweet enough to stop rambling and stay on topic.   So the orb!  Do you love them?  Hate them?  My mom is not a fan.  (Sorry mom.  I loved it too much to let it go.  I think I can change your mind when you come to help me move.  Are you packed yet?)

Have you all seen Shelly’s DIY version of the Orb Chandelier (House of Smiths)?  Oh my word.  She made one!  And it looks amazing.  So impressive.  You have to check it out.  If only I had an ounce of her mad DIY skills.  I want to laugh out loud just picturing me trying to attempt something like that!  Let’s just say that if I tried to make one myself, the orb wouldn’t look so orbish.  :)

Hardwood will be finished tomorrow!  Carpenters are running all of the baseboards.  There is still lots to do and we are thinking of pushing back the move date.  (But you can still pack mom.)  I will share more lights soon!

Enjoy your day.

Meal Planning Ideas (Breakfast/Lunch)

So no doubt you read today’s post tile and thought hmm.. Erin’s going to teach us how to meal plan?  Riiiiight.  :)  If you’ve read my blog for more than two minutes then you know that all things dealing with cooking and meal planning are NOT my strong suit.  In fact, one of the first posts I ever wrote for this blog over four years ago when my girls were little was called “cooking is for the birds” and pretty much sums up how I still to this day feel about cooking.  But I do have a family.  And I am the mom.  And much to my dismay, they are all hungry and want to eat from time to time.  So one of my main goals once we move into our new house and get settled is to be better about meal planning.  (Along with my other goal to lose the 5 lbs I gained this year from stress eating.  Wish me luck achieving those two goals at the same time – ha!)

If you’re newish to my blog I want you to meet Koni.  One of my best friends who I’ve been thick as thieves with since junior high.  Quick flashback so you can understand all we’ve been through together…

Sorry Koni.  I had to go there.  We’ve had too much fun in our past not to share it.  I’ve got three scrapbooks full of pics of the two of us acting like idiots.  Good times for sure.  :)  Anyway – now that you’ve met Koni and can see that she is as dorky entertaining as I am, let me tell you something else about her.  She is AMAZING at cooking and meal planning and preparing healthy food for her family.  People used to always tease us that we shared a brain so I keep hoping that her cooking and meal planning skills will somehow magically rub off.  It hasn’t happened yet but I’m not giving up hope.  Koni has four kids with one on the way and decided she wanted to be more organized with breakfast and school lunches.  She also wanted to make sure she was feeding her kids a good variety of healthy foods (you know – instead of feeding her kids Cheerios for breakfast every single morning like some people she knows… ahem).  So she made a list of breakfast food ideas and another list of lunch food ideas.  Then she put together a two week breakfast and lunch menu so she always knows what to buy and prepare.  Every two weeks she starts over.  I think this is BRILLIANT!  I’m sharing her lists and menus with you today in case something like this might work for you.  OR in case you just need some ideas for healthy breakfasts and lunches.  I’d love to try this.  My menu won’t be nearly as impressive, but at least we might be able to get out of our Cheerio rut.  Maybe Cheerios on Mon, Wed, Fri and on Tues, Thurs I’ll get wild and whip up some waffles?  Baby steps.  :)

Past Fall Posts

Man.  Last week was killer!  So sorry for my lack of blogging.  We had so many issues pop up at the new house that needed to be dealt with and Kenny was in LA all week for work.  Of course he was!  It never fails that whenever he goes out of town thing start to blow up.  On one of his last trips my washing machine broke and starting leaking water all over the upstairs.  This week… well… I don’t know where to start.  All I can say is that we are moving into our new house at the end of September and we will most likely still be building it for months after.  I keep joking with my cabinet, lighting and landscaping guys that before long I will be chatting with them in my pj’s while we all break for waffles and oj.  It will never end!!  :)
Football is on and I’m lighting my pumpkin spice candle and sitting down to blog.  My mind needs a break from packing the old house and thinking about the new one.  Fall is upon us!  Not that you can tell in my neck of the woods.  It’s crazy hot here on the coast and the leaves on our palm trees tend to stay perfectly in tact.  But the soothing sounds of a football crowd on TV tell me it’s Fall nonetheless!  So I thought it would be fun to take a look back at some of my past Fall posts.  (You can click on the link below the pictures for the full post with more details.)  YEA!  Seeing all of these pictures again makes me want to break out the gourds, eat some Halloween candy, and hang a Fall wreath on my new front door.  Guess I better wait until the paint is dry first.  :)  Let the season begin!

And last but not least, the link below is to my favorite quote which seems especially appropriate this time of year:
{Let Gratitude Be Your Attitude}

Enjoy and Happy Fall!

Beach day

A fun day at the beach.  Not today.  These pics were from a random summer day.  Today we went couch shopping.  A continued search we started weeks ago.  At store #1 we walked in and sat down on a couch and Kenny said “I’m bored.  Can we be done?”  So you can imagine how much fun it has been dragging him around to find “the ones.”  So much fun that I wanted to forget couch shopping today and remember one of our fun summer mornings at the beach.  I love it when Kenny comes to the beach with us.  The kids love it too.  He plays in the waves with Kole and boogie boards with the girls.  He is fun at the beach.  Not so much fun furniture shopping.  :)

Hope you enjoyed your Labor Day Weekend!

Popping in

Popping in quick to say hello!  You guys were so sweet about my last post.  Thank you for your kind, encouraging words.  I love blogging.  It’s so fun to connect with wonderful people who have similar interests.  We would all SO be friends if we lived by each other.  :)
Quick update on where we’re at with the house…
They started laying the wood floors today!  Hooray!
The stuff they put on the floors to level them and prep for the wood is so strange.  It’s a sort of glassy blue material.  El loves it (because it make it easy to twirl around in her socks) and wishes we could just leave the floors as is.  I think not.  :)

They also started our side gates.  They are going to have inset panels and be painted white.  We have been holding off on a lot of plants and flowers for the yard until everything inside is finished because workers are still tromping over everything each day.

So fun to see some of the fixtures and lights going in!

And as for me, I am swimming in a combination of boxes, new house order forms, and back to school paper work.  So much still needs to be done between packing up the house and finishing the new one.   I’m so scattered I’m not sure what to work on.  So I decided to do a blog post.  HA!  :)
p.s.
Happy Birthday to my better half today!!
Love you so much babe.

Our conversation this morning trying to coordinate our schedules for the day…  Can you cover this?  Can you be there for that?  Someone needs to sign for appliances… Don’t forget the meeting tonight… crap! it’s your birthday!  We don’t have time for your birthday!  We’ll fit it in from 6:30 to 7:00.

Of course we are making time.  Girls are decorating the house as we speak.  My kitchen table is covered in markers and glitter and I will have mini football drawings stuck to my walls for a week.

2nd and 4th

2nd and 4th grade.  Makes my heart hurt just a little to say that out loud.  They look so grown up to me in these pictures.  First day at a new school today!  The girls were so excited.  And nervous.  They wanted their nails painted and Ad wanted straight hair for the big day (to go along with her new toothless smile).  :)  I did it for her but told her only once in a while because I miss her curls terribly when they’re gone and oh my word.  It took a looong time to get those curls straight.

It was strange not knowing many people.  The first day of school is usually such a fun time to greet friends and familiar faces.  We were happy the school mascot was waiting with a hug.  :)

Kenny took Ad to her class and I took Ellie.  El was a bit nervous and I could tell she didn’t want me to leave right away.  This was definitely a harder transition for her.  After four years at our old school she was so well known and was really missing all of her good friends.  We found her name tag and she sat down at her table.  A darling girl next to her instantly introduced herself and then said “what’s your name?  welcome!”  She and Ellie smiled at each other and it was all I could do to not reach right across the table and hug that girl so tight.  But instead I snapped a quick picture, gave El one last squeeze, whispered that she would have an amazing day and left.  Lingering at the door with a few other nervous parents.
I had a busy day but couldn’t help watching the clock waiting for pick up.

And was thrilled to greet them with a hug and see huge smiles on their faces!  They had a terrific day.  According to Addie this school is amazing because she has a class bunny as a pet, the playground was awesome and the desks are made of a cool kind of wood.  :)  El said she was a little homesick for her friends and old school, but really liked her teacher and she made a few new friends.  Our conversation walking to the car…

“You’ll never guess mom – one of my new friends LOVES panda bears!”

“Well!  There you go.  We were meant to be here so you could meet a panda loving kindred spirit.  It’s going to be a great year.”
Now.  Fingers crossed I can meet some nice moms and feel better about this transition myself.  My girls weren’t the only ones with that “will people like me?  will I make friends and fit in” nervous feeling in the pit of their stomach today.  (Does it ever go away?)
My plan is to follow the example my 2nd and 4th grader set.

Hold my head high, smile big, and just be myself.
Who knows?  Maybe I’ll meet a new friend who loves to organize.

Backyard grass!

Grass.  In the backyard!  Hands down the most exciting thing for me to date with our building process. Big patches of grass for my kids to play in.  I’ve dreamed of this day for quite some time!  Forever actually.  Well, ever since I started having kids which feels like forever.  :)
Here’s a pic I took just a day or two before the grass arrived.
When our backyard was land of the pavers.

And here they are installing it!

Isn’t that grass beautiful!?  Of course I took a picture or two.  Or maybe two hundred.

My kids were using their little bike path tonight!  Now that the grass is in it’s finally clean and safe for them to ride around on.
Exterior is still a work in progress.  Not much has happened with it lately since all efforts have been focused on wrapping things up on the inside.  Balconies still need to be painted (they prepped them today), shutters haven’t arrived yet (I’m so anxious to see pops of black on the house!), outdoor entertaining area has a ways to go, and there are still a lot of minor finishing touches.  Trampoline also isn’t finished. (I’ve had several questions on how my landscaper is doing the in-ground trampoline so I’m going to do a post explaining it all at some point when it’s completed.)  There are a few things we are still adding to the backyard before it’s all said and done, but oh my word.  Grass.  Room for the kids to run and burn off all of their endless energy!  I don’t think my excitement for this stage could be matched.
Well.  On second thought.  There might be three other little people who are equally as excited.  :)

p.s.  A few more outdoor lights were installed today (ignore the dust!  it’s everywhere!) and we started lights and fixtures inside.  So fun seeing the house finally starting to come together.  I can’t wait to show you all!  :)
