Organized Sports Equipment (Sunny Side Up)

I’ve mentioned a time or two that I’ve been working on our garage.  Organizing our garage has basically been a 5 year project for me.  Ha!  Can any of you relate?  Let’s be honest.. garages are HARD spaces to get under control.  They often become a home for ALL the extra things we may or may not use.  I’m happy to report that I’ve almost cleared out ALL the extra things (that I know we WON’T use) and my garage is so close to being done!  This is the last pile I’m dealing with this week and most of it is sports equipment.  I have struggled to find a good solution for our random sports equipment (tennis rackets, balls, rollerblades, etc.) so for years it has all just been in a pile on our garage floor with all of the balls in this black garbage sack.

Until now.  :)

A few weeks ago I was searching for organizers for our garage slat wall (more on that soon!) and I came across some fun organizers for sports equipment.  I found SO many good solutions (all linked at the end of this post!) and ended up going with this storage system.  (It just sold out, but is available here in white or you can get this system which is basically the same thing.  This is another similar option for less but it looks like it’s backordered a while!)  Kenny and I put it together over the weekend while we were watching TV (guess that show!) and I snapped this pic quick with my phone.  Typical scene from my family room on a Saturday!  There’s usually a board game up we’ve been playing and some type of project I’m tackling on a blanket.  :)

I decided to put it next to our garage door because this door leads to the backyard where my kids usually play with our sports equipment.  Easy access!  I almost ordered this system that hangs on the wall (I had a different spot picked out for it) but then I decided I wanted to be able to move it around if our needs change and I’m using it for something else.

Honestly I don’t know why I didn’t look for something like this sooner!  Before I even put the items inside I could tell it was EXACTLY what we needed!  Ready to see the after?

Ta-da!  Took all of 8 minutes to put our random sports equipment inside and wow.  What a difference!

Plenty of room for all of the random sports balls!

Along with a handy little shelf for other miscellaneous items.  The top rack can hold more balls if needed and this similar set up (for the same price I paid) has another row of baskets on top.

Side storage for things like tennis rackets, baseball bats and hockey sticks.

There are also a few hooks on the side you can hang items from.  I’m not using them now, but I’m sure they will come in handy at some point!

This is one of those simple projects that didn’t take much effort and will have a huge impact.  It’s so nice just getting our sports equipment up off of my garage floor so we aren’t tripping over it every day getting into our cars!

Plus it’s going to be so easy for my kids to keep these items put away where they belong after they use them.  WIN!

Our garage cupboards and drawers are finally organized!  My goal is to finish our garage slat walls this week and then I’ll start sharing pics of this space.  This is one project that is going to be beyond gratifying to check off of my to-do list!  5 years and much blood, sweat and tears later..  :)

So funny.. once I got all of our sports equipment organized my kids suddenly had a new interest in everything.  Kole saw it and immediately started playing with his tennis rackets and hockey set and Addison took off in her rollerblades.  It made me smile and remember how when they were little all I had to do was rotate their toys around in new spots in the house and suddenly old items became fun again. :)

Quick trip around the house to make sure these rollerblades still fit before she put pads and a helmet on.  They do!  We were laughing.. not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing.  Ad is hands down the shortest student in her entire 8th grade class!  Kole is 4 years younger and is about to pass her right up.  (Sorry Ad!  One of many gifts from your mom.) ;)

We’ll just keep the rollerblades on this summer.  They add at least another 2 inches!

:)

Below are lots of fun options for organizing sports equipment depending on what you need!  I love all of these systems.  Anyone else tackling your garage this summer?

  1. Wow, Erin! What a fantastic sense of accomplishment you will have after you complete this garage project. I am so happy and giddy FOR you! Our garage continues to be a hot mess. Yours is beautiful to look at with your cupboards, drawers and slat walls. And now with a fabulous storage usit for the random sports equipment. I mean how could you NOT want to keep it nice and organized.? I may now add garage envy to my little list of envies (tongue in cheek). I cannot wait to see what all you have done and will share. And I love that your kiddos are now interested in those pieces. Well, they have been on lockdown, muddling through school stuff. Now they are free to play and this is a fun new(old) way to play. :) Thanks so much for sharing, Erin!

    1. Thank you so much Jeanne! You are the sweetest to be excited for me. It has definitely been a labor of love.. ha. I’m so ready to just have it done and not always hanging over my head. Really I’ve put it off for too long. I was going to get it organized years ago after we had the cabinets installed but there always seems to be something else more fun to do than organize the garage right? :) I hope you and your kids are enjoying the summer so far! Are most things open now in CO? Things are slowly starting to open here but I still haven’t been able to get my hair done. So ready! ;)

  2. Just found your blog a couple of months ago and I really like it. Wish I had your organizational skills and energy. Better yet, wish I had you to organize my house. (It might take a few years!).

    1. You are too kind Phyllis! Thank you! Honestly just start somewhere and spend 15 minutes a day. Small wins really add up. I’ve organized most of my house that way! xo

  3. You can find a similar one at the Container store for much less than the Amazon one you posted. I own it and it works great!

    1. Hi Meladie! I saw that one and almost bought it but it’s backordered until October! I’ll add the link to my post in case anyone wants to wait for it. :) Thanks for the reminder!

  4. I’ve been following you for awhile, Erin. I love your house so much! I know you’ve been in it for awhile now. How do you keep everything looking perfectly new? Your garage looks as if you’ve just moved in! Even your roof looks brand new! And I’ve noticed that, inside, your baseboards, shower tile grout, just everything, does not look like a home where a family with three kids live! Lol
Is it because you use a central vacuum, or maybe because you have maid service weekly? I find it so hard to keep spaces fresh when my family is using them on a regular basis. Tell us, please, what is your secret??

    1. Hi Michele! You are too kind. Thank you! The reason the garage looks so nice is because I spent most of last month scrubbing it down! Ha. Seriously though.. you should have seen it before. I washed all of the blinds, wiped off the walls, swept the floor (multiple times!) and then Kenny mopped it for me. It has been a work in progress! I’m kind of a clean freak and I do have help with the deep cleaning inside (that’s a huge help!). I’m going to write a post on my cleaning routine sometime this summer! I really think my secret to staying on top of things is in my daily routine. But also know that my house gets messy regularly too.. it’s constant work and the struggle is real! xo

      1. I hear ya! It probably helps that you don’t have two cats and a dog shedding everywhere! And I HATE floor care! My husband was sweet enough to buy me a Riomba and that has helped a lot. Afraid my home is forever past looking brand new, though.

  5. Another job well done and off your list! I wish a had your energy! You are a superstar. I love seeing the rooms in perfect order, it makes me want to get more things done. 🌺

    1. You are the sweetest Noreen! I don’t know about a superstar but very kind of you to say. :) I hope your summer is off to a good start! xo

  6. Your home is beautiful. Can you tell me what type of siding and windows you used? As well as the colors. I have heard differing comments between hardie cement board and lp smart side lap siding. I also would love to use the hardie shingles, but understand there is much waste and much more expensive to install. Anyway, your home is breathtaking and thank you so much for sharing.

  7. Erin, would you kindly share the type of flooring you have chosen for your garage floor? It looks rugged and able to handle anything.

Also, what type of garage cabinets did you choose?

Are you happy with all of your garage choices? If not, what would you change in your garage?

    1. Hi Valerie! Our garage floor is Epoxy! We had it professionally installed and absolutely love it. I designed the cabinets custom with a local cabinet company. I can’t think of much I would change.. we’ve been pretty happy with things! An extra room/space for the bikes would be nice. That’s the only thing that sometimes bothers me because there isn’t as much walk space because of them with all of the cars parked. We might eventually move them up on the wall or ceiling to make more room but we use them a lot so having easy access to them is more important than the extra space now. I’ll be sharing a full post with garage organization tips soon if it’s helpful! :)
