Happy Birthday Car!

Happy Birthday to my cute sister Carly! She’s 30 today. Welcome to the 30’s Car! So far they haven’t been too bad. Here’s a fun mini trip down memory lane…

Now you know why my kids pose so much. The apple doesn’t fall too far. While I may be the one posing however, at least my shorts aren’t up to my chin. :)

I love this picture (think we’re in a hotel room?) because we are reading Sweet Valley Twins. Remember those books? They were the BOMB and Car and I worshiped them! Yes, I’m the one with the pasty white legs. Carly and I look and act completely different. She is 21 months younger than me but has always been taller and tanner and older looking (thighs I would kill for!). The looking older thing always bugged me when we were little and people mistakenly thought I was the little sister. Now that we’re BOTH in our 30’s…payback time!!! :) Ok Car – you still have the tan skin. And the thighs.

College Graduation (Car – I know you’re going to complain about your left eye in this picture. Sorry. I couldn’t get the “red eye” tool to work on that eye for some reason. Still wanted to use it because I like the picture. I’m laughing right now because I know how bugged you’ll be. My blog – remember!) :)

More of Car with Ellie

5 Things I love about Carly:
1) She is FUNNY. There is no better way to say it. Carly is just funny. Her sense of humor is hilarious and she can have anyone laughing in minutes. Everyone who knows her loves this about her. Car and I don’t talk without breaking into laughter at some point. Doesn’t matter what we’re talking about. She and I have so many private jokes and know each other so well that we sometimes laugh just looking at each other.
2) Car knows fashion. She has always been on the cutting edge of style (even in Elementary) and while she used to NEVER let me borrow clothes (unless I swore I’d tell everyone in the halls at school that what I was wearing was a Carly original), she has loosened up a bit. ;) I now call her with any and every question about what to wear and how to wear it.
3) Speaking of calling Car with any and every question….another thing I love about my sister is that she knows how to handle me. I am extremely indecisive. It’s something I hate about myself, but I can’t change. I really struggle with making decisions (big and little) and Car is always there to rescue me! I constantly call her and drive her nuts asking if I should do this or that…buy this or that…then return this or that. She laughs, teases me, tells me I’m making her crazy…but in the end she helps make my decision for me, spends an hour assuring me I’ve made the right decision, and the next day when I call and tell her I’ve changed my mind – she understands. My mom and Kenny refuse to put up with this, but not Car. In the end she is always my ‘go to’ girl. I do have to say though that I payed her back for all of this by making a pretty important decision for her a few years ago: YES! You have to go on a date with Shawn Hazen. The rest is history. :)
4) Carly has been an AMAZING Aunt to my girls. She flew out to visit after both of my girls were born and has been a big part of their lives ever since. She loves them, plays with them, and always makes them feel special. Ellie adores Aunt Carly and gets so excited to see her. I love the way you love them Car.
5) Carly is just plain impressive. She is independent, career oriented, extremely intelligent, a great people person, beautiful, witty, and now she can add “amazing mom” to the list. She has always been there for me and I don’t know what I would do without my sister. I was so excited when I found out my second baby was going to be another girl. Sisters. Just like me and Car.

Happy 30th Carly. Love you so much!

Fun Mail

I’m not a fan of the mail. Who wants to deal with bills and coupons? Other than the occasional thank you note & my favorite magazines (Creating Keepsakes & Real Simple) I don’t much care for the mail and it is Kenny’s responsibility to get the mail each night, sort through it, and deal with whatever needs to be dealt with. Except in December of course. :) Is everyone else as excited as I am to be getting Christmas cards!? So fun to see pictures of all of your favorite families and plaster them all over the wall in a great big collage. We started sending Christmas cards out when we had Ellie and I have loved the process every year. I especially love making my cards (although I enjoy it more the years I start working on them BEFORE December as is the case this year!) The two years I didn’t make my cards were the years I had a baby under one (no explanation needed). Since I plan to make my blog into a book each year (family scrapbook) I wanted to include pictures of our past Christmas cards. So to those of you who have received these cards, sorry if this is a bit redundant! (You can skip past this post.) If you haven’t received a card from us and would like one, let me know and I’ll add you to the list! Of course then you’ll also have to send one of your cards to me. :)

Gotta go…Kenny and I are watching “Fred Clause” while I work on my cards. Isn’t Vince Vaughn great? Love him. Love Christmas cards. Love this time of year. (Have I mentioned that yet?) :)

Good Things

It’s December!!! I have a to-do list a mile long right now (as I’m sure everyone does this month) but blogging just sounded more fun than most of my to-do list. Besides, EVERYTHING is a good thing this month. :)

I’m so happy my girls are feeling better! The week before Thanksgiving they both got the stomach flu. Addison had it the worst and was sleeping so much I was a little worried. You know something is wrong when your two year old just wants to lay around. Luckily they recovered just in time for turkey. Addison is up to her usual tricks and all is well again.

I came upstairs the other night to find Addie sitting in the dress-up drawer in her Minnie Mouse ensemble. The bedroom floor was covered in dresses as it usually is. She loves to change from one dress into another. Such a girl!

Ellie is my little Christmas angel. She is a total mini-me and LOVES everything about this time of year. We’ve had so much fun decking the halls together. When she was a baby I bought a little “baby’s first Christmas” Santa hat for her. She gets so excited to pull it out every year with the Christmas stuff. Here are some pics of Ellie in her hat…

{Ellie – 11 months}

{Ellie – 2 & Addison – 7 months}
I called Ellie to come downstairs because it was time to leave for gymnastics Tuesday morning and this is what appeared in the kitchen ready to go. :) She wears the hat all the time! She even slept in it the other night.

Listening to Christmas music (especially the Chipmunks…I love the Chipmunks). I took the picture above yesterday. Addie was down for a nap so Ellie and I turned on the Christmas music and I cleaned and decorated while she colored Christmas pictures. Such a fun afternoon.
A nap with football on (isn’t football the best thing to nap to?)

Conversations with my husband. Kenny is the king of sarcasm and it seems we rarely have serious conversations with each other. Typical conversation…
Kenny: “Erin you have got to watch your Verizon minutes…do you know how long you’ve talked on the phone this month!? 1700 minutes. That’s about 30 hours you’ve wasted on the phone!”
Erin: “Sorry babe. I was talking to my boyfriend in Spain. He loves my voice and just can’t seem to get enough of it.”
Kenny: “He better be a Verizon user so I’m not paying for those minutes.”
Staples. I love Staples. All kinds of school supplies and organizers. Such a fun store.
Just the last few days it has finally cooled off a little and we turned our heater on. YEA! Heaters smell like Christmas. I love the smell and sound of the heater. Hopefully San Diego will stay in the 60’s for awhile and I can pull out my turtleneck and boots I’ve been dying to wear. It finally feels like Christmas in San Diego. Lights are on all the Palm Trees. :)
Speaking of lights…our outside lights are up and the yard screams Christmas! We put so many up this year (in addition to our big Frosty, Candy Canes, Rudolph, reindeer, and sleigh) that our house lights up our whole street! Kenny was such a good sport to help me – he doesn’t share my enthusiasm for outdoor lights. Thanks again babe. The girls and I get so happy when it gets dark and we can check out our lights.

New Christmas tree this year! It doesn’t look too much different than our old tree but there is a big difference in the amount of time we spent putting it up! Our old tree (which used to be my parents’ tree) was such a pain! We had to put it together branch by branch and the thing was HUGE. The girls would get all excited to decorate the tree and then six hours later we’d finally have it assembled with lights. By then we were all so sick of it we weren’t in the mood to decorate. Well not this year! First thing on my December to-do list was to buy a new tree and we found this one at Costco that I loved. Just the right size, branches are attached, lights already strung. So much easier to put together! Next year…time to buy new decorations? The snowman decorations I’m using are also old ones of my moms, but I don’t know if I can part with them. They remind me of too many Christmases growing up. Good memories. :)

Family movie night! Watched Barbie’s Christmas Carol all together in the play room. The girls loved having Kenny and me watch the whole thing with them. Of course half way through the movie they started playing with toys and it was Kenny and me who were glued to the tube. We’re suckers for any feel good Christmas movie…even Barbie apparently. Can’t wait to watch our favorite (aside from It’s A Wonderful Life of course)…The Family Man. If you haven’t seen it, it’s a must see for December!
Speaking of good movies…went to Twilight last weekend with friends. It wasn’t as good as the book (what movie ever is?), but I still loved it. I really liked Edward and Bella in it. Some of the Cullen family I wasn’t as sold on (Rosalie and Jasper???), but overall they did a great job sticking to the story. Now I want to go re-read the books, but I can’t let myself get sucked into that world again. It’s a world where nothing else exists and my family suffers. Fun to see it on the big screen though!

My girls came down the stairs like this a few days ago. They told me they were off on a picnic with Rudolph and had to get away from all the bears and hot lava that was coming (once again). These nightgowns (courtesy of grandma) are their new outfit of choice when we’re hanging at home.

Gilmore Girls re-runs. Man I miss that show.

LOVE Weiman Stainless Steel Wipes! Makes cleaning Stainless Steel appliances such a breeze. Great for all those little fingerprints. :)

Got my first Christmas present of the season! My cute friend Ann brought over a bucket of treats with the movie Elf. Her husband dressed up like Elf for Halloween and I felt so out of the loop because I hadn’t seen the movie yet. She made sure to fix that. :) We watched the movie and loved the treats. Thanks Ann! Such a great gift – made for a fun December night with my husband.

(Ann and her husband and little boy for Halloween. How cute are they!?)

I love Ellie’s pre-school! Before I sent Ellie to pre-school a couple of years ago I spent forever researching schools to find the best fit for her. I absolutely love the one I chose. It is such a fun, cozy environment with great teachers and amazing learning opportunities. I feel so good sending her there and can’t wait for Addison to start next year. I took this picture in front of a house Ellie’s pre-K group built when they were doing a unit on architecture. They are always working on something fun and have been doing a lot of neat holiday projects. Good times. Love Ellie’s pre-school. Love my girls. Love this time of year. Lots of good things!

Our Thanksgiving

Happy Turkey Day everyone! How stylish are we!!?? Because Kenny is so busy at work we weren’t able to travel to be with family this year (missed you all!). Instead, we spent the day with friends and had a great Thanksgiving. Angie brought these ever so festive hats to get us all in the mood. What am I thankful for this year? That we don’t have to adorn ourselves in these beauties on a regular basis! :)

Here are the pilgrim women after SLAVING in my kitchen all day. Oops! You can see the Claim Jumper sack and box behind us. Secret’s out! We had our meal catered. FABULOUS! The food was delicious and the only work was setting the table and warming things up. I’m thinking a new Thanksgiving tradition is born!

Of course it wouldn’t be Thanksgiving without LOTS of football. While Ellie colored, Addison scored brownie points with daddy by putting on her Chargers dress to watch the game. The other night she came in the living room and shook her head and said “daddy…are you watching your flapball show AGAIN!” I feel your pain Addie.

Hanging out at Angie’s

After Thanksgiving dinner at my house (and a short break for naps) we headed to Angie’s house for round 2. The kids played and made gingerbread houses while we enjoyed pie.

Parents are stuffed and exhausted…time for a movie for the kids so we can chat! Great end to a fun day.

(Bring on CHRISTMAS!!!)

Christmas jammies!

So while I’m holding off with the Christmas books, movies, and decorations until the SECOND after Thanksgiving, I just couldn’t wait any longer to give the girls their Christmas pajamas!

Annual Christmas jammies photo shoot…

being silly

One more surprise…

How fun are these!!?? When Rudolph and Clarice kiss, Rudolph exclaims “I’m cute, I’m cute…she said I’m CUTE!” The girls LOVE them. We’re big Rudolph and Clarice fans around here.

Adding to the collection.

(Don’t you just love Clarice’s shoes…it’s all about the shoes girls)

There once was a girl

who had a little curl, right in the middle of her forehead. When she was good, she was very very good…

but when she was bad she was horrid.

Good Things

My Ellie is swimming! This may not seem like much to parents of children who resemble fish in the summer time, but for our family…this is big! Ellie was terrified of going under water for the longest time, but now, thanks to our persistence, a great swim teacher, and more money on swim lessons than I really want to think about, Ellie is swimming under water. She passed her first swim level last week and hasn’t taken off the bracelet her teacher gave her. We’re so proud of you Ellie!

The economy may be tanking, but at least gas prices are down!

I love the show Little Bear on Noggin. It is the only show (aside from Barbie movies) that BOTH of my girls will watch. It has such a calming effect. Perfect for that ‘bewitching hour’ right around 6:30 when I need some peace before bedtime!

mmmmmPumpkin Cheesecake at Cheesecake Factory. It’s seasonal and to die for! If you haven’t tried it, head to the closest Cheesecake Factory immediately! Date nights with Kenny and this Pumpkin Cheesecake – two VERY good things.

Only 11 more days till it’s time to deck the halls!

My girls have been really into coloring and art projects lately. I’ve loved how much they are entertaining themselves (what – I can actually turn on the news in the evening and prepare dinner without someone hanging on me?). I was trying to figure out a way to organize their supplies and found this turn tray with cup holders from Pottery Barn Kids. PERFECT! Even matches my playroom. Happy coloring!

Cuddling with Ellie in bed listening to it rain
.

Ooo-la-la! This group is so posh! (That’s a fancy word for fancy) Just look at my mom and her cute friends. My mom’s friend Nancy hosted a ‘Fancy Nancy’ party for their monthly bunko group. They all dressed up as fancy as they could and enjoyed a night of fun with decor and food that couldn’t have been fancier. What a stupendous idea! (That’s a fancy word for great) My girls loved seeing pictures of their grandma dressed like Fancy Nancy. My mom and her friends are too much fun!!! ***BTW – if you haven’t read the Fancy Nancy books yet, they are spectacular! (another fancy word for great) ;)

Cookie dough. Some things need no explanation.

Seeing Ellie give Addison “rides” around the kitchen on her blankie. Addie inserts thumb in mouth and is ready to cruise!

Santa Clause VS. Santa Ana!!! We seem to be having an endless summer here in San Diego! Things just aren’t cooling off at all, in fact, this last week temperatures here on our coast have been high 70’s low 80’s. My girls are still in sleeveless dresses and I’m ready to break out the Christmas decor! The one good thing about all this is that the plants in my yard are really taking off! Kenny and I killed so many plants for the first few years we lived here attempting to be gardeners. We finally figured out how to make things grow and look pretty…hire a landscaper! My yard makes me smile every day!

Some friends who know the cooking skills I possess suggested making Rhodes rolls for an easy dinner side dish. I made them last Sunday and am happy to say they turned out great! The kitchen smelled so good! Ellie said to me “mom…it smells so good in here…is this Thanksgiving??!!” Poor girl. I’m really making an effort to cook more…
(also eating more! Three of my good things are pics of food. Nice. Must be that time of year.)

Can you say cheap labor? On the weekends Kenny always takes my car to get washed and then fills it with gas for me. (Yes – my husband takes good care of me!) My job is to scrub the floor mats while he’s gone because they don’t wash them very good at the car wash. Last weekend I decided it was time to delegate! The girls had a blast scrubbing away and I enjoyed a little down time. Girls…I think you missed a spot!

How much longer?

I’m trying really hard to hold off everything Christmas until Thanksgiving…but I don’t know how much longer I can wait!

Veterans Day

Happy Veterans Day! What a special day to acknowledge and show appreciation to American Veterans. Love it. Just got back from dinner with my girlfriends. When Kenny asked me what the occasion was THIS time, I said Veterans Day of course! Yeah…he didn’t buy it. He thinks my friends and I will come up with any excuse to have a girls night and get out of putting our kids to bed. He’s right! Whenever I think of random one day holidays like Veterans Day I think about my days at Zions Bank. I worked there as a teller while going to college and loved it for two reasons. 1: I worked with some of my best friends from High School (my sister even worked with me for a little while before transferring to another bank) and 2: Random holidays. Banks close for everything. In fact, my official job at the bank (which I loved and took very seriously) was to hang the “sorry we will be closed tomorrow” signs. I have so many fun memories from that time in my life. Today I thought about the Veterans and how grateful I am for them…and I thought about my days at Zions Bank. Good times.

And where exactly was our manager when these pics were taken???

Good Things

Wow. October was busy. It came and went so quickly and I got behind on my “good things.” I have been writing random things down (on random pieces of paper all over the house) for the last few weeks, I just haven’t taken the time to blog about them. So this will be a long post. Which seems to be the norm for me lately…

The time change! Love this time change! Kids to bed earlier and up earlier in the morning makes for a more productive mom. Plus I’m just ready to be home and in my p.j’s by five or six at night and it’s easier to pull this off when it’s dark outside.

Hearing my girls singing songs from the new Barbie move “The Diamond Castle.” The new Barbie Christmas DVD just arrived in my mailbox and I can’t wait to show it to my girls! Kenny and I are actually excited to see it too. Sad…huh.

My Brookstone Coin Counter. Love this thing! I gave them to a few people for Christmas gifts a couple of years ago (because what else do you give someone like my dad who has everything he needs and is probably as sick of getting sweaters and books as you are of giving them to him!). After I gave them away I kept telling Kenny how cool I thought they were. What a slick way to organize loose change! He bought me one at the end of football season and called it my “being such a cool and tolerant wife during football season gift.” I just love hearing the clink clink clink of my change organizing itself. Always makes me happy. (Wonder if I’ll get a gift this year?)

SeaWorld’s “Halloween Spooktacular.” It actually didn’t feel that different than regular SeaWorld, (just fun Halloween decor all around) still – a fun day with the kiddos.

Kenny’s cute grandma sent the girls Happy Halloween cards in the mail. (She is so darling – always sending holiday packages). They each had a dollar in their card and I said “look Ellie, your first dollar!” She answered, “what’s a dollar for?” (Sadly, not much these days)

YEA! The election is over!!! I absolutely HATE contention and this election was full of it! California was in such an uproar over Prop 8 (glad it passed) but even more glad I don’t have to hear about it for a while. While I voted for McCain and always tend to lean to the Republican side of things, I do have to admit that I like Obama. Don’t like what will happen to my taxes, but I do get a good overall feeling about having him as our President. I guess we’ll see… anyway, glad it’s all over. LOVE this country…just don’t love contention.

Daddy coming home from work at the end of each day. (The only one more excited than the kids is MOM!)

So my friend Angie and I have worked out a fabulous trade for Tuesday afternoons. Ellie and Madison have dance lessons so one of us takes the girls to dance while the other one takes the wild and crazy two year olds to the park. It feels so good to actually watch Ellie every other week instead of always chasing Addison around and trying desperately to keep her from disturbing class since she always want to be doing whatever “Lolly” is doing. So while the girls are doing this…

Their siblings are doing this…

(completely content and unaware of what they are missing!) **Just a side note – Addison and Mitchell are such a crack up together! They remind me of an old married couple – in love one minute and ready to kill each other the next!

My Spooky Halloween tree was a big hit with the girls this year. They painted cats, witches, bats and ghosts and then covered them in stickers and hung them on the tree.

There you go…I can’t cook, but I did a craft. Counts for something – right?

Getting the chance to style my hair like this again was a good thing. When I was in high school and did my hair like this I had to wake up at 5:00 in the morning to get to drill team practice at 6:00. I used to shower and gel my hair and then go lay on a heating vent in my brother’s room and let the heater dry my hair. I did this for two reasons. One: I was lazy and this way I could catch a few more zzzz’s while my hair was drying and two: the heater worked better than a diffuser to give it that crispy crunch look that was oh so cool. This worked great in the winter, but I used to do it in the summer too! My dad would get SO mad at me! I’d turn on the heat…in the summer…in St. George… just to dry my hair. Sorry dad. Love you. :)

The smell of pledge and the sound of the dishwasher running. Usually means the house is clean.

A dentist appointment without any problems or work to be done.

Just discovered I LOVE Hershey Hugs. I bought them to cook in a treat (found the recipe on the Internet) and then of course never made the treat, just ate the bag of hugs. (Cause that’s what I do…buy food to prepare and then don’t prepare it).

Ellie made her debut in primary (church) a couple of weeks ago. She had her first Sacrament Meeting speaking part in the primary program. Her line (which she wrote herself) was “I know God loves me because he loves little people.” We rehearsed and rehearsed and when the big moment came she delivered her line beautifully. Kenny and I beamed like she had just won the Congressional Medal of Honor. These are pics I took of the girls that day before church…(they are becoming quite the little posers! Guess that’s what happens when your mom is constantly taking your picture).

Kenny in the black sweater I bought him.

(He just LOVES it when I snap photos of him when he is trying to get out the door and to work in the morning).

Nights ARE cooling off here! Still 75 degrees during the day, but the nights are feeling cool. Cool enough that I started putting Addison in her footed pajamas. I just LOVE babies in footed pajamas. Glad she has at least this one more season to wear them. I’ll be so sad when I don’t have a little one running around in footed pajama’s anymore. Sad enough to have another baby? Depends on the day you ask me…. AND how cute the footed pajama’s are. ;)
