Fridge Organization (Sunny Side Up)

We are organizing our kitchens this week! How is it going!? I didn’t have much time Monday or Tuesday but I’m definitely going to find an hour today to tidy some drawers and cupboards. I’ll share my progress soon! Let’s kick things off with fridge organization because that is a hot spot in most kitchens! It’s a space that constantly needs to be maintained and I’ve really struggled to keep mine organized. You might remember last summer when my fridge looked like this. Yikes. It usually isn’t this bad, but with kids home and travel it was a mess for months! I knew I needed a better system in general and finally figured out something that works.

Phew! Remember this before and after!? SO MUCH better. Part of the reason I have struggled to keep my fridge organized is because our fridge shelves are shallow and a lot of organizers don’t fit and work. I ordered these clear containers from the Home Edit collection at Walmart (love their products!) and you guys.. I have been obsessed ever since! Honestly they have been the best solution for our fridge!

Fridge Organization (Sunny Side Up)

I started in the summer with a combination of these narrow bins and these food storage containers and couldn’t love them more! They come in 3 different sizes and all stack so nicely on top of each other. The lids seal so tight and I love that they are so narrow! Perfect to save space in a fridge or pantry. You can buy this 3 piece set with one of each size OR buy them in groups separately which is what I did. You can order a pack of 4 large canisters, a pack of 4 medium canisters, and/or a pack of 6 small canisters.

Has my fridge stayed organized since this little summer makeover? Honestly while it doesn’t always look THIS perfect, yes! These organizers have been a game changer for me. It takes a little more time right after a grocery store run and if I’m busy right when I get home, I’ll pull out organizers that are empty or need to be rinsed out and set them by the sink, toss our groceries in the fridge and then when I have 20 minutes later in the day I’ll wash produce and put everything inside of the containers. It’s so worth it to me to take time to do this! Not only because my fridge looks clean and organized (which I love!) but because we all make healthier choices when snacks are washed and cut and ready to eat. Plus I can fit a lot more food in my fridge when it’s organized like this.

I’ve been so happy with these organizers that I couldn’t wait to order the new options Home Edit released! They now have large and medium clear containers (perfect for meals/leftovers) and my personal favorite.. a bento box container! SO GOOD. I’ve shared before how I like to prep healthy snacks to grab when I’m working or going to be in my car for a while. I usually add a hard boiled egg, turkey and some fruits and veggies. On busy days it’s my lunch! They are perfect for my kids to grab to eat after school too. I usually make a few without eggs for Ad. :) #allergies  Over the weekend I made a grocery run and got these snacks ready. I added yogurt with blueberries and strawberries in one too. Here are the containers with lids off.

And with lids on and sealed! Ready to be stacked in the fridge.

I took this picture the day after I got food ready and my crew had already eaten a lot of the food in the large containers so they are looking a little empty. Ha. The large size holds a lot of food!

{egg containers}

Looks like I need to go back to the grocery store for some new ketchup! :)  Confession: I have been very anti egg organizer in the past. I’ve always thought it was so dumb to transfer eggs to a clear container because you need to be able to see the expiration date. Also I don’t like to organize JUST to make my home pretty. I want my home to be functional overall! Functional and pretty. :) But I finally caved and bought this set of 2 clear containers because my boys have been eating more eggs in general and with these organizers I can keep them in our fridge door stacked! It saves so much space because the eggs we’ve been buying at Costco come in a large, bulky container that just takes up too much precious space in my fridge. The eggs on the top right are separated because they have been boiled. I added a little sticker on the side and wrote the expiration date on it and now I’m done rolling my eyes at egg organizers. Ha! #swayed #neversaynever

I’ve always been able to keep my pantry organized but my fridge was another story. I can finally say that my fridge is organized and staying that way!

Fridge Organization (Sunny Side Up)

This is real life and it never looks exactly the same. The difference is that now I have containers that I love in a variety of sizes that I can use for what I need and stack to save room. If we have leftover pizza one night and I want to put it on a plate, I’ll pull out a couple of my containers. OR put the pizza slices in the large container. I’ve finally figured out our system! I’m a happy girl. :)

Now let’s all get going on our kitchens! I’m going to set a timer for 20 minutes today and just work fast and see how much I can get done!

Cheers to awesome containers, healthy snacks and all things organized!

Life is about the little things.

  1. Looks great Erin! I’m glad you found a system that works for you. I really like that you have healthy options at the ready. So smart. While I may not be able to have all the bins, I can do better at keeping my fridge organized. You’ve given me some nice motivation. Thanks so much for all you do! :)

    1. So happy to hear that! Thank you Jeanne! We definitely eat whatever is easy to grab around here whether that’s healthy snacks in the fridge or if nothing is ready, chips in the pantry. Ha. That’s why I’m trying to be better at having healthy options cut up! You’re the sweetest. :) Happy fridge organizing! xo

  2. Erin,
On things like eggs and other items that NEED dates in order to be safe, I just rip off the date from the carton /bag/package and put in in the container with the food, sometimes in a sandwich bag. You could also CUT out the date to make it look neater looking. I am sure YOU would ;) I just rip it off tho!
I was always doing that “egg flotation FRESHNESS test” (looking like a science project on my counter!) Till I started ripping off dates. Anyway, just my own quickie solution!
BTW I also just found out that eggs last a LOT longer than we ever thought! Your fridge is PERFECT!
