Garage Organization (take two!)

garage-organization-13
Time to share another garage organization update with all of you.  Garage organization take 2!  You might remember in my first garage organization post I majorly purged half of our stuff and then semi organized everything we wanted to keep by placing it around the perimeter of our garage.  We also reached out to a local garage cabinet store and spent some time figuring out how to best use this space and then designed some garage built-ins.  Built-ins!  Whenever I hear the word built-ins I feel instantly happy.  You too?  See… that’s why we all get along so well. :)

But before the built-ins could be installed we had to do more cleaning and purging.  Oh my word.  What a project this garage has been!  This pile of paint left over from building was the first thing I had to sort through.

Next was a whole filing cabinet full of my old teaching files.  Little by little I got rid of even more stuff than I had the first time.  I really only want things in this garage we are actually going to use!

Then we started pulling everything out.  This is the best way to really give your garage a good cleaning.  I used to do this in our previous house at least once a year.  Pull everything out, sort, toss, sweep, etc.

The neighbors love it. ;)

I tried to categorize (that word is right up there with built-ins for me) and group like things together as I pulled them out.  This is a pile of our camping gear.

Making progress!  We had some planks left over from Kole’s room and my new shiplap display wall.  I’m sure I can make good use of them!

Kole made good use of them too and as always, was a huge help. :)

I gave the garage a good sweeping and then put everything else back clumped in the middle.

The perimeter was all clean and ready for installation day!

I was so excited the day the company came to install the cabinets!  I kept going out to the garage and chatting with the guys working, checking things out, taking pictures.  Grin on my face from ear to ear!  I’m sure they thought I was crazy.  I was too happy to care. :)

Adjustable shelves!  My favorite kind. ;)

Cabinets and drawers done on the left!  I’m so in love.  Simple, clean, and LOTS of space to store things!  I chose gray cabinets because I was afraid white would show too much dirt in a garage.  I also chose simple, large silver pulls for the drawers and cabinet doors.

And done on the left.  Such an exciting day!  My husband was laughing and teasing me about how giddy I was over these cabinets.  I kept calling him at work and giving him updates.  He was like “that’s great babe.. hmm.. now the shelves are in huh.. sure you can send another picture.. talk to you again in 5.”  I couldn’t contain myself!

And that’s our garage in its current state!  I was itching to start organizing every single thing and putting things away in their newly built home, but life got in the way.  I haven’t had time to do much since we got the new built-ins and to make things worse, I started decorating Kole’s bedroom so all of his old furniture is now sitting in the garage too.  Garage organization is serious business!  And taking me forever.  But I’m determined and motivated to get this space wrapped up!  I still have some more fun plans for our garage and in my mind I can see it!  A clean, organized garage that brings peace and happiness every time I pull my car inside.

Baby steps!

But one baby step closer.

:)

Here are the past posts I’ve shared on our garage progress if you’re just joining the party!  And what a party it is. ;)

  1. How exciting and I’m serious about that. I so admire that you clean out your garage at least yearly. You absolutely would faint if you saw ours. I look forward to the post where you share it all put together and organized. And it looks like Kole’s room may be done in the near future. You are on a roll! Good luck pulling it all together. And I SO hear you about real life derailing plans. That is the story of my life anymore. Thanks so much for sharing! :)

    1. It’s so hard isn’t it Jeanne! Life is so busy.. it’s hard to carve out time for something like garage organization! I’ve really got to prioritize finishing it before the holidays hit or it will be another year before it’s done! I doubt I’d faint if I saw yours! But you made me laugh. :) Enjoy your day cutie! xo

  2. I think you and I are so much alike when it comes to organization! I can’t stand mess! I get hipped up when things are in shambles. In fact when I start cleaning and purging, my hub leaves the house for awhile! Lol! I love the gray cabinets you’ve chosen. I like open shelves, but I’m leaning toward the doors and drawers. I like things out of sight! I’m jealous that your garage is huge! May I ask, is that epoxy on the garage floor? I’m so in love with it. That is one of things on my list of many to have done. I can tell you are overjoyed with this makeover. I love it too! xo

    1. It is epoxy Nancie! We had it done soon after we moved in and I LOVE it. Seriously one of the smartest things we did. I think the two of us are a lot alike for sure! Wish we could organize together! And then head to lunch. :) xo

  3. Ahhhh! I have been anxiously waiting for another garage update and you did not disappoint! I am drooling over the built-ins. So much beautiful storage. Love the gray color too. Can’t wait to see the finished product. I have to tackle our garage and I agree getting stuff off the floor is key. Erin, what kind of floor do you have in your garage? Is it concrete with a special paint/sealer over the top? THANKS FOR THE INSPIRATION AGAIN!!

    1. Thank you so much Pamela! I can’t wait to see the finished product myself.. ha! :) Our floor is epoxy! We had it done soon after we moved in. A great way to keep it clean! Enjoy your day cutie! xo

  4. Eeeek !!! absolutely love what you have done ! I am showing my hubby right away as our garage is a disaster !
Keep us posted , im sure you will lol
Cant wait to see everything in its new home . Xx

  5. This is going to be amazing! I am so jealous, both of the size of your garage and of the built-ins! And also the floor. All the snow/ice/salt in the Northeast really does a number on garage floors and it’s so hard to keep them looking nice. I can’t wait to see how you organize everything! The garage and unfinished basement are “hot button” issues for my husband and I… He won’t get rid of anything and he won’t let me organize so both spaces look like a bomb went off! I keep telling him he would be happier if he let me purge and organize so he could actually find what he needs… But he is stubborn . :)

    1. Oh that’s hard Nicole! My husband used to be like that about our garage when we first got married. It was sort of his space and he didn’t want me touching anything. Then one day I just couldn’t take it anymore so I went to town organizing all of his tools and stuff and he liked it so much better! Now years later the garage is more my domain.. ha! I toss and organize what I want and he just appreciates having it clean. You might need to just sneak in and take over at some point! Just don’t tell him that came from me. ;) xo

  6. i love your huge garage and built ins on both sides and the front. I also like the hanging panels, if that’s what it’s called that below the upper cabinets on the sides. So I’m assuming these are custom built ins that you designed with the company that installed it? I do like the gray color too and your floors. We want to do that floor for our garage but we have other projects on our list that the garage floor just doesn’t seem like a priority right now. Although, my husband already had installed cabinets on the front of the garage a year ago and rack on one side where we hang things.

  7. This is just SO gorgeous Erin! (I’m not sure I ever thought I would say that about a garage, ha!) Really awesome job. Can’t wait to see what else you do with it. Can I ask what the stripes are on the wall under the upper cabinets behind Kole? Thanks!

    1. Thank you so much Lisa! So happy you like it! You’ll see! I’m still finalizing how I’m going to use them but I’ll for sure share it as soon as I do! xo

  8. Looks great, Erin! I’d be giddy too! Garage organization is a bear so you just have to take it a little bit at a time. So time consuming! How wonderful to have all of that storage!

  9. Erin what is the brand of cabinets you have? I know it’s a local company but are they custom built or a company like monkey bars?

  10. Erin, I love love love your garage organization!! What a dream this would be to have and I know how happy this must be making you everyone you pull in!!! :))

    1. Well I’d be much more happy if it was actually organized! But yes! Love the built ins. :) Thanks sweet friend! Loved hearing from you tonight! xo

  11. Happy I found your site, because its a beautiful one.
You are so lucky to have a husband who not only do work around your home, but did a fabulous job installing the cabinets. Thanks for sharing.
