Front Entry

Sharing a few pics of our front entry today!  When you walk in our front door you see into our formal living room and then out into the backyard.  Our entry is a simple square so when we were in the planning stage we decided it would be fun to do something different with the floor so that it stood out a bit more.
Here is our original sketch of the entry floor plan.  Most of the floors throughout our house are wood so we decided to keep some wood in a criss cross pattern and put marble tile in the squares.  I was a little nervous at first that this would look too busy and I kept going back and forth about whether or not I should keep this pattern or just leave the entry simple with only hardwood, but I ultimately decided to mix it up and go with the pattern.  I’m so glad I did!  I really like how it turned out.
Here is a pic I snapped with my phone when they had just laid the hard wood.  This took a LONG time for my hardwood guy to make all the cuts exactly perfect.  He was all about attention to detail – the two of us got along famously.  :)  He did such a great job lining everything up!

And here’s the floor all finished with the marble!  I remember the morning I chose which piece of marble should go in each square/triangle.  We came so close to not having enough marble to finish it all and I was stressed because each batch of marble is so unique that I would have had to order a whole new batch if I didn’t have enough.  Luckily we had just enough to finish the entry!

A pic I snapped with my phone from the upstairs after the wood was finished.
And here is what it looks like from above today!  Still love that orb light.  :)

A few more pics of the entry…

This picture I took standing in our formal living room so you can see how the pattern is just on the entry way floor.

I was going to get shots from a few more angles but a certain someone crashed my photo shoot.  No more pictures mom!  Time to pay attention to me!
So that’s a wrap on the entry post.
:)
xoxo, Erin

  1. I love it!! We have a rug-look pattern in our entry and I just get so happy every time I pass by– 100 times a day! You definitely made a great choice there, and your flooring guy sounds wonderful– he did beautiful work.

  2. Oh my goodness, too beautiful. Love how it flows but adds a little punch to the entry. Really love it next to all of the woodwork. Beautiful!

  3. You know when I was looking at the first few photos and seeing just the entryway, my thought was “eh … not my thing”. But the pullback shot where you can see how it gives a little separation to between the foyer and the living area made me rethink! :) I like it!

  4. Nice! But…I want to see a photo view of when you are standing in the doorway, looking into your home — can you see the pool from the front entryway? Love that floor – what an eye catcher!

  5. Love this Erin! You’ve probably explained before, so apologies if I’ve missed, but I wondered how you decided on black for the front door and also if you considered black for the outside and grey for the inside? Also, will you have any furniture or other decor in the entry or are you planning to keep it as is?

  7. Thank you thank you everyone!

Katrina – I will show that view soon when I share our formal living room!

Hi Mags! I actually painted the door (front and back) a dark grey at first! But I didn’t like it so I decided to just stick with basic black. I may change the door color at some point but for now I like that it matches all of my black shutters. And yes! I’m decorating this space! I already know how I want it to look I just have to find the right pieces. I’ll share an entry decorating plan at some point! :)

  8. I love this, and in sunny California, you won’t need to cover that up with an ugly rug! I’m so jealous, but in a good way because I’m super happy for you.

  9. Thank you! The orb light was from Restoration Hardware but they’ve discontinued the chrome finish! :( I know because I got one of the last ones. They have it in a rubbed bronze though and it is stunning too! Hope that helps!

Brittany – so kind of you to say! Thank you so much. I really appreciate that.

  10. Erin,
So gorgeous! I am looking for lighting for our entry and of course stopped by to get ideas from you. :) The main thing I am thinking as I look at all the pretty lights I see is…how am I going to keep that clean?? With the drought here in California it seems extra dusty right now and I am having to wipe things down a LOT between that and the kids and the dogs! Do you have someone come in to help with cleaning and getting at all these light fixtures or have you figured out how to keep them clean on a regular basis? I want something pretty but not sure I can keep it up…lol…

  12. Hi Erin, we are choosing a black paint for our front door right now and I love that your front door is a rich shade but not too glossy! Do you mind sharing your paint color and the finish you chose (satin/semigloss?). Thank you so much! You can email me directly if it’s easier at kristycory at gmail dot com!

    1. Hi Kristy! Thank you! That door is painted “Black” by Dunn Edwards. How’s that for a creative name!? Ha! :) It’s definitely more of matte/satin finish – I don’t remember exactly but yes – not glossy! Happy you like it! xo

  13. Hi Erin, your home is so gorgeous!!! I was hoping you could help me & share the info on your hardwood floors. I’m in the process of picking for my own home and I’m having such a hard time!! I love yours. I would so appreciate it. Thank you!!

    1. Hi Cori! Thank you so much! Our floors are custom but I wrote a post all about them! Go to my search bar on the side of my blog and type in “Hardwood flooring” and it will pop up. Hope it helps! xo

  14. Hi Erin!
Love love what you’ve done. Everything looks so great. I wanted to ask what kind of brand and color your chose for your hardwood flooring? Please!

  15. Hi Erin! I looooove your house! Do you have the dimensions for the wainscot in your entryway? I love the height and the partitions both vertically and horizontally. Please share if you have them handy, i need to tell my builder ASAP ;-\ It’s exactly what I’ve been looking for!

    1. Hi Milu! Thank you! Sorry I just saw this comment! My entry wainscot is 6 1/2 feet tall and each partition is around 30 inches wide. Hope that helps! xo

  16. Hi Erin,

I love, love your front entry with the mix of the tile and marble. Looking to do something similar. Can you say how your contractor put down the wood floor prior to adding the tile? I assume he used an adhesive but was wondering what type?

    1. Hi Jo! Thank you! He did but I’m not sure what!? Sorry I’m not more help! I watched him do it but didn’t pay attention to what he was using! xo
