House update

Popping in with a few recent pics of the latest progress!

Sample stair newel post.
My inspiration picture.  I added a recessed panel to match our shaker style cabinets, but aside from that said copy this!

We are adding a fun detail on the treads going up.  I’m excited to see how it looks when it’s all finished!

Picked out the pavers for our front/back yard.
And A LOT of progress has been made on the outside.  Front door is primed, siding panels are in place, porch lids are completed…
and we are ready for rock!  I’ve been having second (OK twenty-second) thoughts about the rock going around and above our front door.  Wondering if I should just keep the siding look there as well and only use the rock as a wainscot in other places?  I’m not sure, but I need to decide quickly!  Like tomorrow.

Someone asked about my ceiling/door size when I shared this pic of my mudroom last week:

She mentioned that my dutch door was so big it made the door into my mudroom look like a little hobbit door.  That made me laugh!

That door isn’t the entrance into the room, it’s storage under the staircase (a hobbit door with a purpose).  Thought I better clear that up in case anyone else thought that too!  I’m short, but not that short.  :)

Oh!  Just noticed it’s midnight.  Happy Tuesday friends!

xoxo, Erin

  1. The house is looking so good. I love all the details. I think the rock would look so good. But, I love rock though!

It is midnight and as I am typing this, the has baby decided to wake up.

    Have a great week.

    Cathy

  2. Wow! When my husband gets out of the military and we build, chances are I’ll be bringing pictures of YOUR house and saying “copy this”! Gorgeous.

  3. The house looks great! We have stone around our door and brick everywhere else and I love the look so I’d say go with the stone. :)

  4. Thanks you guys! So sweet of you to say. I am hitting a wall with building burn out lately so your encouraging words are very appreciated! :) And yea for two votes stone! Leaning that way…

  5. Haha how funny! I wondered about the hobbit door too. Your house is turning out beautifully! I bet you’re so excited for it to be finished, and for you to move in. We just bought our first house, and get to move in 10 days!! :) yay!

  6. It is coming together so beautifully! Exciting – keep sharing. I don’t want to build again but its fun to enjoy your journey :)!

  7. I have never seen a house with 13 roofs just in the front. I assume that’s the front. My father was a roofer, he loved the copper roofs. It is a roofer’s paradise. When you need to paint, you won’t need much. Between doors and roofs and windows 2 gallons should do it. I like the idea of the stone too. Down south it helps to keep the house cool. Here in New England, stone is not necessarily your friend. I have friends who have a lot of stone inside, ceramic floors, granite counters, stainless steel appliances. Try keeping that warm in the winter. You’re amazing, keeping the kids occupied, the house planning, the moving, the packing, I would be insane.

  8. It looks beautiful. Can I ask you a question, what size are your kids bedrooms going to be in the new house? Are you giving them walk in closets too? We are thinking about building too, and was wondering your views were? Thanks. I am so excited for you!!

  9. The stone would give a more ‘cottage, natural’ feel to your entrance. The siding would be a more crisp, clean feeling. Either would be beautiful, it just depends on what would look more welcoming to you. When you decorate the front porch, would you love to have the rock to provide the main texture/character, or would you prefer a more neutral, clean backdrop of the siding? Those are things I would take into consideration. Good luck! It is absolutely aaaaamazingly georgeous!!

  10. It’s so cute seeing Cole watching the digger. Reminds me of my son when he was 2 and they replaced the water mains in front of our place. He was out there EVERY. SINGLE. DAY watching them work. He was crazy about construction equipment! One of the guys let him sit in the digger one time while they were on a break and we took pictures of him “working”. Framed them and they’re still on his wall. He doesn’t remember it but we sure do! I’m sure you’ll remember Cole’s excitement just as much :)

Oh, and I think the hobbit door is cute!

  11. Love love love all the pics of your new house you’ve shared so far. I can only imagine how excited you are about your new house. Can’t offer an opinion on rock or siding b/c I’m a very visual girl. No picture, no opinion. ;-) So, since we’re all following along, oohing and aahing over your beautiful house will we be invited over for a grand tour when it’s complete? hahaha

  12. Laura – congrats on purchasing your first home! So exciting!!

Burse Blessings – Thank you! The rooms in our current house are super small so we wanted to make sure the kids’ rooms in this next house didn’t feel so tight. They are each around 15×14 plus the closet. Yes – all walk in closets. (Can’t wait to organize them!) So excited for you if you decide to build! It is quite the adventure. :)

Kierstin – thank you! Your comment was so insightful. I have been thinking about that all day!

Tiffany – FOR SURE! And if that doesn’t happen, I’m sure you’ll all get one in pictures. :)

  13. Awesome pics! It looks like your place is really starting to come together! I’m excited for the time when I get to look at my new house and see it so far done, but at the moment, it’s still a vacant grassy block with a tree out the front!

  14. Hilda – happens all the time! No biggie! :)

Anonymous – we are hoping July, but it will probably be August. I’m crossing my fingers we are in before the new school year starts. :)

  15. wow….Your house looks great! Are you guys building your own house?.that’s awesome..I wish we have such big land lots here in Toronto…must be so expensive too! Houses in Toronto that’s only 2500 sq ft cost $750k..to knock it down and rebuild would cost us over millions of dollars! I love how organized you are too! thanks for the ideas….! congrats on the house!
