paint and advice

Hope everyone had a good weekend!  Ours was a productive one.  I decided to paint a wall.  My house is driving me crazy because I want to re-do everything BUT as I’ve mentioned before, we are house hunting.  We may find a house we love in two days, or we may find a house we love in two years.  I kept putting off decor changes thinking that as soon as I started making a mess of things we would find our dream home.  Then it hit me.  As soon as I start making a mess of things we’ll find our dream home! So I’m tearing into this house with high hopes that it will all be for nothing!  :)

I didn’t know where to start, so I just slapped some paint samples on our dining room wall and picked the one I liked best!

The color is called Jamaica Bay by Behr  and I got it at Home Depot – I hate Home Depot by the way.  But I love this color!  When you hold something blue against it, it looks green and when you hold something green against it, it looks blue.  It’s a great sort of aqua color.  I have to say that Kenny and I are NOT DIY people.  If we want new furniture, we buy it.  If we want something painted, we hire a painter.  But this wall was such a small space that I figured we could figure it out on our own.  At least I hoped we could.
I taped everything while Kenny had the girls at swimming lessons and then when they came back I put Kole down for a nap and we all got to work!  Kenny painted a little…..

I painted a little…..

Even Ellie painted a little.  Addison opted out because the thought of getting paint on her well thought out outfit was too much to bear.
Two hours later Kenny showered and came downstairs in this shirt.  I decided it was a sign.  A sign of what, I don’t know.  That we’ll find a new house soon?  That this color is the bomb?  That I should paint more walls and buy Kenny more shirts in aqua?  All to be determined.  For now, we are getting used to this change.  I walked downstairs this morning, walked around the corner, and WHOA – there’s a  bright bluish greenish wall!  Now I just need to make a few other changes so that it doesn’t look so out of place.  But I have to say that I’m very proud we painted ourselves.  Maybe I’ll become a DIYer after all!  Can you be a DIYer and hate Home Depot???
And here is another question for anyone kind enough to answer it….
Kenny and I are planning an adults only trip to New York in the fall and are trying to choose which Broadway musical we want to see.  We’ve seen Les Miserables on Broadway and Wicked and Phantom in L.A. (Wicked was the best!) so now we’re thinking either Lion King or Mary Poppins.
Has anyone seen either or both of these?  Any opinions on which one is better?
Thanks so much!  Hope your week is off to a good start!
xoxo, Erin

  1. I haven’t seen the Lion King, but I did see Mary Poppins at the Ahmanson Theatre in L.A. It was excellent. But of course, The Lion King is the most popular show on Broadway so it must be good…right?

  2. I saw the Lion King in London. It was amazing. I saw Mary Poppins in Chicago a couple of years ago also very good! I love my SUPERCALIFRAGILISTICEXPIALODOTOUS T-Shirt :) I couldn’t tell you which one I’d want to see again. (I was pregnant during Mary Poppins and did get a little sleepy at times, so I don’t know if I can blame the musical or the pregnancy :) )

  3. Lion King was AMAZING!! When they start with the Cirle of Life and these huge, fabric animals are coming from everywhere…soooo cool!!

  4. I saw the Lion King and the animal costumes are amazing…..the play is just like the movie……some of my family members were expecting it to be different. I don’t know why. I loved it. I did not see Mary Poppins….personally I would try to see both…but I love to go to see plays.

I think it is cute that your husbands shirt matches the wall color. :)

  5. love that color! it matches all your new bowls. weeee!
can’t wait to see how you put it all together.
are you going to take down the red and yellow in the kitchen? love those colors too!

i’ve never been to broadway :( so no advice here. i’m sure either will be so great!

  6. My daughter and I saw The Lion King in New York. It was beautiful but Mary Poppins was absolutely wonderful. We had 3rd row seats a little to the left so that made it the best. I don’t want to give anything away. I would vote Mary Poppins but both were wondeful.

  7. My vote would be Lion King, I saw it a few years back. In the words of my preteen daughter it was ‘awesome.’ The costumes were amazing and the songs absolutely fabulous. You would not be disappointed.

  8. Well Wicked is the best ever and would be my first pick to see any time but Lion King is a must see. The staging, costumes and effects are outstanding! Mary Poppins is good but overall there isn’t a comparison. Bindi has a good idea – see both!

  9. Erin! That color is so beautiful! I can’t wait to see the rest of the transformation.

I have not seen either Mary or Lion but I think Mindy saw Mary Poppins years ago and loved it!

How fun that you’re doing a getaway with Kenny!

You look GREAT, by the way.

    Miss you!

  10. The color looks fantastic! Wish I had a place to use that color in my own house!
We have seen Mary Poppins, even took our kids with us and it was just awesome. Have not seen Lion King although I do know it is one of the more popular shows…I would still pick Mary Poppins…but then what can you expect from a gal who’s blog title is Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious?!

  11. Oh how fun to go to NY. I keep telling Steve we need to get back there again! Sometimes it is surprising to people how much I love plays especially musicals. Loved Lion King and Wicked and going to Mary Poppins in September. Hope you get to as many as you can.

  12. Hi Erin! I love the new color : ) Just for my two cents on the musicals – I don’t think you would be disappointed with either one; they are both fantastic. Mary Poppins has spectacular tap dancing in it (speaking from one dancer to another), but the Lion King is just awe-inspiring (in fact, I’m taking Frances to see it this winter when it comes to town). Definitely take in both if you have a chance! Have FUN : )

  13. I love both shows– but your girls would love them too, so I would wait until you can all see them together. For an adult NY trip I would recommend Rock of Ages or Memphis. They do have some language and more mature content, but they are amazing! Memphis takes place in the deep south and has a jazz/gospel feel to it. Rock of Ages is all 80’s hair band music– so you will be able to sing along to every song. It’s a good love story and it has lots of fun characters :) Can’t wait to see your NY photos!

  14. I have seen all of them. I wouldn’t waste my time on Mary Poppins again. It’s cute, but I think more for kids. Lion King is fabulous–very big, bright, colorful. Loved it! But of course, Wicked is my all time favorite. I’ve seen it 8 times and would see it again tomorrow! :)

  15. I know it’s not one of your options, but I would save save Lion King and Mary Poppins for when your girls can go with you. Take them to Lion King in Vegas, and wait for Mary Poppins to come to a city near you. If I were you, I would go to MEMPHIS. My mom, Haylee, and I went this past May in NYC. We LOVED it, and it is still the original cast. It won for best new musical last year. Just a suggestion! The wall looks great. LOVE that color.

  16. I haven’t seen MP, but I’ve seen Lion King twice and would LOVE to see it again…it’s amazing! It even converted my non-broadway way loving husband into a fan. Now he’s trying to find a way to take me to see Wicked. :) BTW if you don’t like Home Depot, you can take any color paint chip to your favorite paint store and they should be able to match it in the brand you like.

  17. I saw Mary Poppins in LA, and although it was good, I was a little disappointed because it was so different from the movie, and I love the movie SO much. It was still fun though, but I am going to vote for Lion King!

PS – Love reading your blog, and nice work on the painting!

  18. We have that color in our guest bedroom & we love it! It’s a fun & happy color. We have the nautica theme going with that one. I will go for Lion King.

  19. Hi Erin! Been reading your blog for a long time but never commented…the play question made me do it. I’ve seen many plays but Wicked is my absolute favorite of all time…can’t wait until I can see it again. I absolutely LOVED Lion King…so great! I haven’t seen Mary Poppins so I can’t give a comment on that.

Love the paint color…can’t wait to see what else you do.

I love your blog. I can really identify with your origanization fixation and your kids are adorable. Thanks for many good reads!

  20. The Lion King is worth seeing for the props alone. The costumes are amazing and you will get chills from the very beginning. I haven’t seen Mary Poppins, but I’ve heard good things about it. I think I’d go for Lion King though… it really is amazing!

  21. I saw the Lion King in my hometown Vancouver, Canada..and it was SPECTACULAR!!! the music, the costumes, everything was great..I can only imagine how much more it will be on broadway!! Love the coloured wall..love aqua..looks good with chocolate brown too!

  22. Hi Erin. It’s your long-lost organizing twin Suzanne.

I loved Mary Poppins, but there’s nothing like The Lion King. Check out my post from our visit backstage last April.
    http://aviewfromthesewer.typepad.com/a_view_from_the_sewer/2011/04/broadways-the-lion-king-and-a-little-jimmy-fallon-too.html

We stayed at the Marriott Marquis, which is right next door, and the hotel was perfect for our visit. The restaurants were good, too, an dit was accessible to everything (shopping, Broadway, 5th Ave, etc.)

    Have a great time… You’ll love it.

  23. Another vote for Lion King. I adore Mary Poppins and will see it someday. BUT the costuming for Lion King is so amazing, the audience burst in to spontaneous applause at several different points.
But if you’re in NY…how about something that’s not on tour yet, like Book of Mormon?

  24. Yes, you absolutely CAN be a DIYer and hate Home Depot! We have switched to Lowe’s – when necessary – but usually just get the things we need at our local Ace Hardware – they are friendly and helpful – unlike Home Depot!!!Love the wall by the way.

  25. Wow! That was a bold move! Excited to see what you do with it! And if you need to get rid of any of your old decor you can bring it to my bare house.

  26. I have yet to leave a comment even thought I L-O-V-E your blog. I had to respond as I have watched both Lion King and Marry Poppins. Of course, both were on a small time scale however the BEST was the Lion King. Hands down. I hope you have a wonderful time! Renea.

  27. I’ve seen all of the ones you mentioned and my recommendation is Mary Poppins. They are both great- but you can come to Vegas and see Lion King anytime, but you can’t see Mary Poppins as easily. BTW, Wicked is my ultimate FAV!

Both are great- you can’t go wrong either way. But Erin, you are ‘practically perfect’ so Mary is your girl.

  28. I saw the Lion King last year in Vegas and it was sooo good. I can’t imagine enjoying a show more. By the way, love that new wall color!

  29. Dear Erin. Today I went to the container store (aka, Walmart) and purchased several containers for my cords and clickers; because of you. Thank you, sweets, for your inspired posts. You have not failed, indeed :)

  30. What a bright and cheery color…can’t wait to see how you decorate with it! Doesn’t painting always take longer than you think it will?! I always think I’ll quick paint a room…but it’s never quick!

  31. Oh, I am loving that color and my fav thing in the home improvement world is painting. A little paint on the walls can go a long way. I just redid my dining room and formal living in grey with that blue and yellow accents. Such a fun palette.

Have a great time in NYC – it is one of my favorite places on earth.

  32. We just saw Mary Poppins on 7/22. We saw Lion King last summer. Both were great, but very different. Lion King was beautiful, and Mary Poppins was fun. We saw Beauty and the Beast last fall and it was AMAZING! If you can see that one, you must go!

  33. Geez! Give women a chance to express an opinion and they’ll fill up your whole inbox.

We are coming down south in a week, are you in town that first week in August? We leave that Friday so Mat can run a half marathon from the Yankee to parowan Saturday morning.

I saw the lion king (the music and costumes are powerful) but I haven’t seen Mary poppins. None of that information will help you with your decision, but I thought I would weigh in on the matter.

  34. Lion King. . saw it last year in NY. . .the costumes are wow!! the opening seen made me cry it was so beautiful. . have not seen Mary Poppins. . .

  35. Oh, Erin! I forgot one of the most important reasons why you should go see “Memphis” while in New York. Guess where it began, before it hit the bright lights of Broadway? None other than the La Jolla Playhouse. You really should check it out. You won’t regret it. If I could send you one of the songs I would. “Memphis Lives in Me.”

  36. Lion King!! With the costumes and music, it’s such a spectacular show. I didn’t love Mary Poppins- I think I’m too attached to the original story to appreciate the changes they made.

  37. Hey there cute Erin! Wow! You didn’t mention you’ve been going to Home Depot and painting too! That is awesome. And if you really hate Home Depot…I always get my paint at Ace, the Benjamin Moore brand…it’s the one thing you actually don’t have to leave Carmel Valley for! (amazing fact!) and I am so excited you are going to NYC!!! Can’t wait to talk to you more about it. And of course, I totally agree about the shirt being a sign:)! Love it!

  38. The Lion King would be my first choice… I saw it off broadway and can’t even imagine how much better it would be on broadway. My sister lives in NYC and she just saw a play she highly recommended called “Warhorse”. And, I have to tell you my favorite cookie is at Levains Bakery… yummy!!! Have fun!

  39. First off LOVE your blog. It’s one of my favorites. I live in NY and I must say the Lion King is the best. I would take it over Mary Poppins any day. I’ve seen it twice and it only gets better. If you need restaurant recommendations let me know.

  40. We went to Lion King and it was great! Music and costumes were fantastic. Anyone I have ever spoken to that has seen it…loved it! Ive been wanting to go to Mary Poppins but havent made it there yet.I bet you cant go wrong with either one! You both will have a blast!NY will be a much colder in the fall than San Diego..Dress comfortably and bring some clothes you can layer for cooler evenings. Have a great time!

  41. I saw the Lion King on Broadway 5 years ago and thought it was spectacular. Then 4 weeks ago I saw Mary Poppins in Sydney and was completely blown away. The two best musicals I’ve seen, both better than Wicked. They have all the same qualities going for them – unbelievable music, spectacular costumes, lighting and scenery. You can’t go wrong with either, and you should try and go to both!

  43. I recently found your blog through a recommendation of a friend and love reading your posts! What I love the most about this post is that you are painting in your Joe Jeans! You are supposed to paint in scrubby clothes! Either way, the wall looks wonderful!

  44. Not sure you will see this or not, but I would say Lion King. I have not seen Mary Poppins, but I saw Lion King in L.A. and it was one of those things you just have to experience. I am kind of speechless as to how to describe it. Beautiful, spectacular, once in a lifetime opportunity! Even my husband enjoyed it, and he is not into musicals.

  45. I am trying to get our nursery ready for our baby to be. Our theme is going to be “Disney The Lion King”, any suggestions as to what colors from the Lion King would be best to paint the walls with?

  46. I love musicals! I just saw Mary Poppins yesterday, and I think the cast was amazing but Adams performance (especially Step in time) was just out of this world… he is an amazing performer .. if you get a chance, go see it!
