Update from Kenny

Hi everyone,

This is Kenny. Some of you have already heard that yesterday was a traumatic day for our family. We've been receiving lots of calls from friends who wanted to wish Erin well and who had questions about what happened so I decided to hijack Erin's blog and let you all know what's up.

Yesterday morning while I was downstairs I heard a scream from upstairs and ran up to our bathroom to find Erin hemorrhaging. She had Kole in her arms and handed him to me about 10 seconds before she fell on the floor and passed out. Her mom and I quickly called 911 and five minutes later about 10 paramedics were standing over Erin in our bathroom. They couldn't stop the bleeding and Erin kept going in and out of consciousness so they ultimately threw her on a gurney and we headed to the same hospital that we had just left a week earlier when we had Kole -- only this time to the emergency room.

Once we got to the emergency room the surgeon told us that she had already lost about half of the blood in her body and needed to go immediately into surgery or she would likely lose her life. As you can imagine, we were both extremely emotional learning the gravity of the situation. The doctor told us that he would try to do a simple D&C to stop the hemorrhaging but that given how quickly she was losing blood he might need to go directly to a hysterectomy if the D&C didn't work. They then whisked her away to surgery.

After three long hours the doctor emerged from surgery and told me that the D&C hadn't worked. They had determined that she was dangerously close to losing her life as a result of the hemorrhaging and had elected to perform the hysterectomy. The hysterectomy stopped the bleeding and, after giving her transfusions of an entire human body's worth of blood, they had been able to stabilize her. That was the only news I needed to hear.

Erin is recovering in the hospital now. She'll be here for the next several days and will be recovering at home for weeks after that. She can't sit up yet and she is in a lot of pain but the worst is definitely behind her. She appreciates all of the thoughtful texts and emails she has received and all of the wonderful friends and family who always go out of their way to stand by her.

Experiences like these remind you never to take what you have -- especially your health and the health of your family -- for granted. The overwhelming sensation that has overcome us after having gone through the events of this weekend is complete and total gratitude.

We're so grateful to our Heavenly Father for answering our prayers. We're so grateful that Erin's mom hadn't left town yet (she was hours away from flying home) so she could be with our kids while I looked after Erin. We're so grateful for the members of our Church and community who were so quick to reach out and offer to help. We're so grateful that this hysterectomy didn't happen until after we were able to have three healthy children. And I, for one, am extremely grateful that my beautiful wife is going to be around to grow old with me.

If I know my wife, she'll be posting updates again as soon as the nurses unhook the 35 IVs and miscellaneous other tubes that would slow down her typing. She's never been one to let a life threatening illness keep her away from a good blog post.

I only recently started reading Erin's blog a month or so ago and it quickly became one of the blogs I check regularly. I just had my first child, a little boy, 9 1/2 weeks ago and I enjoyed reading about all the preparations for Kole's arrival. Erin's perspective is one that I really relate to and reading her blog is a bright spot in my day. I am so sorry that you all had to go through such a scary and traumatic event, but grateful that everyone is okay on the other side of it. I will be keeping your family in my prayers and wish Erin a very speedy recovery.

I love you sis...did I tell you that on the phone before we got disconnected? I love you so much and I could never in a million years imagine going through life and raising kids without you. It still surprises me we are even old enough and mature enough to HAVE kids, let alone be dealing with life-threatening situations. I depend on you for everything, just knowing you are there and only a phone call away. Apparently you are willing to do anything to have mom and I stay with you and do your dirty work; Kenny and I decided I should come at the end of next week to help with the girls, the baby, the housework, but probably not the cooking. Pizza on Aunt Carly! I'm calling you every 5 minutes today until the nurse asks me to stop. I love you.

Oh my sweet little Erin...I am so sorry this happened to you! I'm sure your mom has told you that I, too, hemmoraged two weeks after I had Gretchen and it was the scariest experience I have ever encountered. Life is so crazy, one minute you're happy and enjoying that beautiful baby, and the next you are clinging to life! I'm so thankful you had your mom and Kenny close by to get medical assistance quickly! I'm so thankful for prayer and for miracles! I'm so thankful you are doing better and that you have three beautiful children to go home to! I wish I lived close to you so I could make you some yummy meals and help my friend, Bonnie take care of you those darling kids! Please know that we are all thinking of you and praying for you, sweet heart! Please tell your mom to keep in touch so I will know how you are doing! Love you Erin and Kenny!

Sue said...

My heart and prayers go out to both of you! I hemorrhaged when my second child was 11 days old. What a scary experience! My outcome was much less severe, but I remember the fear and uncertainty. It came absolutely out of nowhere and in the end, the doctor's determined that my uterus just stopped contracting for some unknown reason and couldn't do it's job of clotting the blood.

Erin, I am SO, SO sorry that you had to have a hysterectomy. I know that you and Kenny were probably done after Kole anyway, but it's different having that decision made for you instead of making it for yourself. As you mourn, please know that so many of us mourn with you and our hearts and ears are open if you want to talk about it.

I don't fully comprehend the nature of God, but of one thing I have a sure testimony. Whatever events God allows or causes to happen, those things are designed to mold us into the exhalted beings He knows we are capable of becoming. Take comfort in the Spirit and know that God has great things in store for your family.

i am new to your blog. i received a tweet asking for prayers from jessica turner, so i followed it to see how specifically i could pray for this momma.

having been thru a similar situation, altho not as emergent, i am praying, Father God, that you will lift up this young family, that you would hold this momma close for healing. for physical healing, emotional healing and spiritual healing. You alone know the reason for this road. Father, we ask that the hormones be kind, to both Erin and her sweet family, and that she knows she is not alone. That You are with her and that she is among friends who have been there at such a tender age. Thank you heavenly Father for allowing her more time with her family. In your Sons name we pray, Amen.

I have never read this blog before (it was linked from another blog), but I am glad I clicked. I can tell the peace you all have just by this post and glad to hear that God is taking care of you all. I pray Erin has a smooth and fast recovery.

Kenny & Erin, What a beautiful family - Kole is so sweet. I am glad Erin is doing better. I wish we lived closer so we could help. Please know we love you and are praying for you.

I just came over from a recommendation at Clover Lane. I have never been here before, but as a mother of three beauties, I can not imagine what your wife (and your whole family) is going through. I have thoroughly enjoyed perusing Erin's archives and look forward to hearing from her upon her return.
God is good. All the time.
Your family will certainly be in my thoughts and prayers.

Been thinking about you guys. You have been in our prayers. I just cried when Bonnie called and told me what you all have been through. I am so glad that Erin is recovering. I wish I could be there to help.

Oh man! Kenny is just as hilarious as you are! I love that you both are able to always look on the sunny side of things. I am so glad, as I am sure hundreds of others are, that you are still alive to inspire and enlighten through your amazing posts! What a scare. Crazy.

Erin, Last week, I too, had a hysterectomy and am worried about the lack of hormones and what to take if any? I have also heard about a lot of women who gain weight afterwards (obviously not you) and am concerned about that. If you don't mind sharing I would love to hear what you decided hormone wise (I am in my thirties and it seems like everyone else I know in this situation are at least 50). If you would rather not, I understand. Just wondering what your thoughts are now that you are a couple years out. (super cute birthday boy, by the way, and I had a late talker too...now I wonder when he will stop talking -wink, wink) Thanks for sharing your world with us!
